It’s Not a “Smartphone” - It’s “RoBoHon”! Sharp Debuts “RoBoHon” Robot That Also Turns into a Smartphone at CEATEC 2015

The comprehensive IT and electronics exhibition CEATEC 2015 (Combined Exhibition of Advanced Technologies 2015) was held at Makuhari Messe from Oct. 7–10, 2015. At the exhibition, Sharp debuted “RoBoHon” - a robot that turns into a cell phone, which they aim to turn into a commercial product in the first half of 2016.

RoBoHon is a small robot with a total height of approximately 19.5 centimeters and weighs about 390 grams. As RoBoHon supports 3G and LTE as well as Wi-Fi (802.11b/g/n), you’ll be able to use him as a cell phone.

When you call someone using the voice operation you can hold RoBoHon in your hands and talk into him like a regular receiver or you can talk through him in a hands free way too.

You can walk around with him in your pocket or put him in a special holster and carry him around your neck. You might need a bit of courage to go where you’re going and communicate via robot but it’s so exciting - like something out of the future in a manga!

Voice input is integral but for places where there is a lot of noise or where you don’t want to talk out loud there’s also a touch panel on RoBoHon’s back. The OS seems to be a customised version of Android, but they’re also working on a unique operating system.

There’s also a camera inside RoBoHon’s head and you can take a picture or use the projector in his head to display both still images and video on the walls or floor using voice commands.

As a robot, RoBoHon can walk on two feet, dance and even get up from sitting down all by himself. You can ask him about the weather and enjoy conversation with him too.

Moving robots like Takara Tomy and Docomo’s OHaNAS and the Sphere BB-8 App-Enabled Droid which work with your smartphone are attracting attention right now, but making a robot into a telephone is an unexpected idea. Which particular carriers will offer RoBoHon, whether it will be sold sim free, pricing and details about the actual release are still under consideration. From here on in, RoBoHon is sure to become a must-see product!
