Studio Ghibli Grand Exhibition Gets Underway in Nagoya!

As of Sept. 12, the “Studio Ghibli Grand Exhibition” has begun in Moricoro Park in Nagakute 1, Aichi Prefecture. It will be open until Nov. 8.

The exhibit is a special part of the “32nd National Urban Greenery Fair Aichi,” which celebrates the 10th anniversary of the 2005 World Exposition in Aichi. The main attractions of the event are the “When Marnie Was There x Yohei Taneda Exhibition” and “Studio Ghibli Grand Exhibition,” which will each be open for a limited time only.

Studio Ghibli President Koji Hoshino who took part in the planning and implementation of the exhibits, commented at an opening ceremony for related media and industry officials on Sept. 10, “I want everyone to come together and enjoy the behind the scenes of the worlds of Ghibli.” Yohei Taneda, concepter and art director on When Marnie Was There, also revealed, “I was largely involved with the exhibits. They’re small details, but...I did the arch in the entranceway and the small staircase too.” He also touched on his career of engaging primarily in live-action movies, saying, “Being an art director at Ghibli, I got to oversee everyone’s hand-drawn work; it was a valuable experience. It’s an honor to have been a part of [Ghibli’s works] for eight years.”

Set up in the “When Marnie Was There x Yohei Taneda Exhibition,” which takes on Ghibli’s latest work, are sets that recreate scenes from the movie and even the working environments of the production staff members. There are also various key frames and screenshots from the movie on display.

The “Studio Ghibli Grand Exhibition” is being held in a location that’s about a 5-minute walk from the “When Marnie Was There x Yohei Taneda Exhibition.” How are Studio Ghibli films created, and how did they become so famous? These questions and the 30-year creative history of Studio Ghibli are explored through around 3,000 valuable items on display, including unreleased material like production notes and proposals, advertisement posters and leaflets, and much more.

These were used in Studio Ghibli company newsletters and more. They are full of pleasant illustrations you’d only see from an anime studio.

The inside of the “Studio Ghibli Grand Exhibition” is colored in everything Ghibli. It is elaborate to say the least, from small mugs to decorations hanging from the ceiling. Our hearts began to throb with memories of Ghibli movies as we walked through the exhibit.

By the way, there are several must-see spots inside the park too, including Satsuki’s and Mei’s house, a sacred spot among fans of My Neighbor Totoro. © Nibariki Co., Ltd.

The “Studio Ghibli Grand Exhibition” will be open until Nov. 8. Ghibli fans, don’t miss out on all the monumental exhibit displays!
