New “Terra Formars” Chapter 0 - Raw Manuscript and Life-Size Version Appear in Shinjuku Station

On Aug. 24 at the Metro Promenade in Shinjuku Station, Tokyo Metro Marunouchi Line, a manga has made a surprising appearance: A previously unpublished episode of the popular manga authored by Yu Sasuga and illustrated by Kenichi Tachibana, Terra Formars, was revealed in this very spot.

Terra Formars now occupies three panels on one side of the Promenade, a busy place where people come and go, making its immense presence known together with “Chapter 0,” the starting point of the whole story. The pages will only be featured for a limited time between Aug. 24 and 30. This is certainly something Terra Formars fans can’t miss out on!

This publication was heralded as the “Raw Manuscript Station Exhibition” from back before its public display. The editorial department of Anime!Anime! went to appreciate this invaluable piece of art right on the first day.

When the crew arrived at the station, they were taken aback by the space and colorfulness the display showed. The exhibited work, “Chapter 0”, consists of two parts, one focusing on humans and the other on the insectoids. What’s even better is that both of these parts are displayed not only as life-sized, huge illustrations but also as raw manuscripts drawn by the hands of Kenichi Tachibana himself. While the life-sized version has a striking intensity to it, the manuscripts have a delicate touch unique to hand-drawn illustrations. It is a composition that allows the viewers to appreciate one piece of work two times.

Moreover, the exhibition is composed in such a way that it features the human side if read from the right, the Terraformar side when read from the left, and squeezed in between are the raw manuscripts. Each of the stories tell about justice from the viewpoint of humans and Terraformars, respectively, and this opposition is also reflected through the exhibition. In addition, the exhibition also features a video introducing how Kenichi Tachibana draws his works. Seeing the richness of the exhibit, it is hard to believe it’s on the streets.
The way it stands out caught the eyes of many passers-by; you could see a lot of people stopping to check the contents, and there were also those who thoroughly read the manga once they ascertained its nature.

The story of Terra Formars starts when humans, intent on terraforming Mars for future migration, find themselves at war with the “Terrafomars,” an enemy they unintentionally created. As both humans and Terraformars fight for their survival, endless battle unfolds. Terra Formars was adapted into anime in 2014 with a second season already announced for production.

What’s more, they also announced the release of a live-action movie starring Hideaki Ito, Emi Takei, Tomohisa Yamashita, and Takayuki Yamada scheduled to premiere in 2016. Terra Formars is likely to stay on topic from here on, too.
