Shotaro Ishinomori’s Cyborg 009 and Go Nagai’s Devilman series, two masterpieces representing the Japanese manga and animation industries, will be united in a special collaborative effort. The product of this crossover is an anime titled Cyborg 009 vs Devilman, and will be open in theatres for only two weeks starting in October 2015. In addition to this unique collaboration, it has been announced that boths series will receive new anime adaptations in the near future.
The director taking on the Cyborg 009 vs Devilman project is Jun Kawagoe, the same director who brought us the Cyborg 009: The Cyborg Soldier series that was aired from 2001 to 2002. Bee Media and Actas will take care of the animation production together.
Although the plot is still a mystery, it might be safe to assume that there will be a group of cyborg warriors each carrying a unique ability, a man with a heart full of justice who wields the powers of evil, and also plenty of intense battles between the two sides.
When asked about the collaborative anime, Devilman author and Cyborg 009 background artist Go Nagai expressed his anxiety during the early planning stages. He originally thought the characters from each series would resist one another just like water refuses to blend with oil, and was very worried about how the anime would end up.
However, after seeing Cyborg 009 vs Devilman for himself, he had nothing but praise for the anime. Nagai expressed how he felt that “both the sentimentally chic 009 and the cool and hard Devilman kept their character as they clashed against each other,” and that the two series worked together harmoniously. Nagai also took the time to thank director Kawagoe, the staff, and the cast for their tremendous efforts that created an anime that he enjoyed so much.
Nagai’s excitement and desire to see the next episode that he expressed tells us all we need to know about the quality of Cyborg 009 vs Devilman, and makes the wait even more difficult!
