The large-scale event Niconico Chokaigi 2015 was held for two days on April 25 and 26 at the Makuhari Messe International Convention Complex in Chiba. Dwango and Niwango, the organizers of the event, have announced that the overall attendance for the event was 151,115. Also, the number of those who streamed the event online through Niconico Live was 7,940,495.
Niconico Chokaigi began in 2012 as a live representation of everything on Niconico, an online content platform. This year was the event’s fourth time being held. It is popular for its hodgepodge of just about everything.
Niconico Chokaigi has seen an increase in attendance connected to it being picked up by many media outlets due to its many popular guests and series. The attendance this year was a 20.9% increase over last year’s attendance of 124,966, and a 63.5% increase over the event’s first year, which recorded attendance of 92,384. With such high support from Niconico users, Niconico Chokaigi 2016 has already been announced. We’ve been told that detailed announcements will be made in the coming days. It seems Niconico Chokaigi, which has new surprises in store every time, will be greatly anticipated for 2016 as well.
The event is progressing not just in attendance numbers, but also in increasing the magnitude of scope of the venue and event itself. The event this year used all halls in Makuhari Messe (International Exhibit Halls 1-11) and the event hall. This year’s Niconico Chokaigi is also spread out substantially, with Niconico Cho Party, a live stage event held at the same time last year, to be held as a separate event this year at the Saitama Super Arena on Oct. 25. Also, the game event Toukaigi 2015 was recently held in February of this year at Makuhari Messe as well. We can surmise that Dwango and Niwango are proactively taking on user participation events as a new core business venture.
