The anime movie project Kono Sekai no Katasumi ni (In This Corner of The World) opened its official site on March 8, 2015. Information about the movie such as its setting and production cast have been unveiled on the site.

The original work, Kono Sekai no Katasumi ni, is by mangaka Fumiyo Kono and set during pre- and post-Second World War in the town of Kure, Hiroshima. The director will be Sunao Katabuchi whose other works include Mai Mai Miracle and Black Lagoon. Studio MAPPA will be working on the anime with production done by Genco, who have successfully handled anime such as Nodame Cantabile, Sword Art Online, and Millennium Actress.

Development for the movie actually started four years ago. However, despite the names of a well-known director and author attached to the project, with the lack of planned tie-ins with a TV anime or game, and being a non-action-oriented original anime movie on top of that, finding means of production proved difficult.

The official site opened this year after completion of the scenario and storyboards, and has become the platform to garner support for the project.

In an effort to get production off the ground, a crowdfunding movement was started on March 9, 2015. The project is being hosted by Makuake, a crowdfunding platform managed by CyberAgent Inc. The crowdfunding will run for around 80 days with a goal of 20 million yen.

Although the goal is actually only a modest amount for the means of producing an anime movie, the money will help to kick off production in terms of hiring staff members and making the pilot.

Options to donate start from 2,000 yen and go up to 1 million yen. In proportion to the amount donated, rewards such as member registration, a letter from the main character, fan meeting attendance, and a mention in the endroll credits exist as well. It should be noted that because this is money donated for aiding the production and not an investment contribution, money donated and potential profit will not return to the donor regardless of whether the movie is able to be successfully made. The main goal is to support the production of the movie.

The studio in charge of creating the movie, MAPPA, have made TV anime titles such as Kids on the Slope and Terror in Resonance. Studio founder Masao Maruyama worked with director Sunao Katabuchi on the title Mai Mai Miracle during his time as a producer and co-founder at studio Madhouse.

Genco, who is in charge of production, have also worked with Masao Maruyama in planning projects such as the movies Millennium Actress and Tokyo Godfathers. With many seasoned professionals working together and the impressive history of works that have been produced, fans can look forward to a wonderful production this time as well.
