On Oct. 19, a big announcement opened the curtain on a new history of the popular Macross anime. The live event commemorating the 20th anniversary of Macross 7 called “Fire Bomber 2014 Live - Basara Explosion” was held at the Kanagawa Kenmin Hall in Yokohama, and there the start of production on the newest TV anime in the franchise, Macross Delta (stylized as Macross Δ), was revealed.
The Macross series is highly popular, but the last TV anime came in the summer of 2008 with Macross Frontier. It’s safe to say the new series has been long-awaited by fans. Macross Delta will tell a new story in the franchise.
Fire Bomber 2014 was held to celebrate the 20th anniversary of Macross 7 which was broadcast in 1994. At the event, Yoshiki Fukuyama, the voice of main character Basara Nekki, performed several songs. The event ended as a resounding success together with the packed crowd of 2,400. Immediately following the performance, this new news was revealed on a monitor and the crowd went wild.
Also, “Songstress Auditions” for the new Macross will begin on Dec. 1. Ever since The Super Dimension Fortress Macross’ TV broadcast in 1982, songs have been an important theme of the franchise. Many songstresses have been born from the franchise to date including Mari Iijima (Lynn Minmay), May’n (Sheryl Nome), and Megumi Nakajima (Ranka Lee).
Continuing on from these artists, auditions will be held all over Japan to find the new songstress of the series. Expect a big star to be born this time as well. Details on qualifications and audition dates will be announced in late November on the exclusive audition page.
The advertisement poster for the auditions is also worth a mention. The visual was created by Risa Ebata who worked on Macross Frontier. Also written on the poster is “2067 - The new songstress who will shake the galaxy is you!” The visual gives the feeling that the number “2067” is connected to the new series.
