Tokyo International Film Festival (TIFF) is pleased to announce that we will be featuring works by Hideaki Anno, one of Japan’s most prominent filmmakers. “The World of Hideaki Anno” will be the first-ever major screening occasion to showcase his works.
When he was in his early twenties, Anno impressed Hayao Miyazaki, who subsequently hired him as an animator on his film Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind. Since then, Anno has created a string of hits, including NADIA THE SECRET OF BLUE WATER (1990), the first television series he directed, and the EVANGELION series, which has become a global phenomenon.
Toshio Suzuki, the producer of Studio Ghibli, who collaborated with Anno for a number of works, described Anno as the only man Hayao Miyazaki would ever acknowledge as his apprentice. “Anno always brings back memories of the time we created Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind. As soon as we agreed that he’d work on the God Warrior character, he came to our studio and never left until the work was completed, sleeping under our desks!” he reminisced. “That was three decades ago, and there is no one in Japan now who doesn’t know of him.”
“The World of Hideaki Anno” will include screenings of around 50 of Anno’s works, including TV and theatrical animation, short films he created when he was at school, commercial films, and promotional videos. ritual, which won the 13th TIFF Best Artistic Contribution Award in 2000, and LOVE & POP, which featured in the special screening section at the 20th TIFF in 2007, will be part of the collection. Other titles and more details on “The World of Hideaki Anno” will be announced at the TIFF Press Conference scheduled to be held in late-August.
Japanese animation—one of the powerful contents in the Cool Japan project—will be one of the highlights at TIFF this year. And “The World of Hideaki Anno”, the first-ever collection of works by Hideaki Anno, will be at the core of that initiative.
This year, we will be extending the excitement of TIFF from the Roppongi area to Nihonbashi and also the Kabukiza theatre, the main theatre for traditional Kabuki performances in Tokyo. The screenings of “The World of Hideaki Anno” is scheduled to be held at TOHO Cinemas Nihonbashi.
Hideaki Anno was born in 1960 in Ube City, Yamaguchi Prefecture.
In 1981, while a student at Osaka University of Arts, he entered the limelight with the opening animation he created for the 20th Japan Science Fiction Convention in Osaka, more commonly known as DAICON III. After that, as a member of DAICON FILM, a group of amateur filmmakers, he was involved in the production of various works. He moved to Tokyo and worked as an animator for the television anime series THE SUPER DIMENSION FORTRESS MACROSS (1982).
In 1984, Anno animated the God Warrior, the character that appears in the climax of Hayao Miyazaki's film Nausicaä of the Valley of the
Wind. He then participated in the making of ROYAL SPACE FORCE - The Wings of Honnêamise (1987) and many other works as an effect and mecha designer. He made his debut as an animation director with GUNBUSTER (1988). In 1990, he directed NADIA THE SECRET OF BLUE WATER, his first television series to be broadcast on NHK (the series was partially directed by Shinji Higuchi). His next project in 1995 was the NEON GENESIS EVANGELION TV animation series, and the theatrical version became a social phenomenon in 1997.
In 1998, Anno took his first foray into live action films, with LOVE & POP. He also directed the TV animation His and Her Circumstances, and GAMERA 1999, a featurette showing the making of the film GAMERA 3 Revenge of Iris. In 2000, he directed ritual, his first work for Studio Casino, the live-action film label of Studio Ghibli, and the live-action film CUTIE HONEY in 2004.
In 2006, Anno founded Khara and took the position of managing director. He is the original writer, screenwriter, supervising director, and executive producer of the EVANGELION theatrical series, first released in 2007.

TIFF’s affiliated multi-content market, TIFFCOM 2014 (as part of Japan Content Showcase 2014) will take place between October 21 and 23 at the GRAND PACIFIC LE DAIBA in the Tokyo Bay area.
