One-Shot to Be Published in August Issue of Jump Square in Celebration of Release of Rurouni Kenshin Movie

A two-part movie sequel based on the popular manga Rurouni Kenshin, which was serialized in Weekly Shonen Jump (Shueisha) from 1994 to 1999, will be releasing this summer. First to release is Rurouni Kenshin: Kyoto Inferno on Aug. 1 and also releasing countrywide after this is Rurouni Kenshin: The Legend Ends on Sept. 13. In synch with this, a new one-shot manga will be published in the August issue of Jump Square. The manga will depict a hidden episode based on main character Kenshin Himura’s greatest enemy, Makoto Shishio.

The one-shot manga tells the story of how Makoto Shishio met Yumi Komagata and the secret behind the formation of his faction. Nobuhiro Watsuki, the author of the series, decided on penning this one-shot after traveling to visit where the movie was being filmed. When Watsuki saw Maryjun Takahashi, who plays Yumi, he said, “I naturally thought ‘Who is this beautiful woman who looks like a large flower?’ She had a presence that I couldn’t help following; it’s as if she was the courtesan Yumi herself.” He also made his enthusiasm for the new work clear: “When I saw the good points like the well-appointed actors and the staff overflowing with enthusiasm, my brain naturally activated, and since I’m a manga artist, it was natural for me to want to create a manga.” Shishio, a traitor wanted by the Meiji government, and Yumi, the best courtesan in Shin Yoshiwara. Look forward to this new story about the process of how these two met.

The first Rurouni Kenshin film released countrywide in 2012 and became a bit hit with a box office revenue of 3.01 billion yen. Reprising his role as Kenshin Himura in the new films is Takeru Satoh. Tatsuya Fujiwara joins the crew as Makoto Shishio. Attention is building around these two talented actors appearing together. Based on the Kyoto arc, one of the most popular chapters of the original manga among fans, the film will show even more action and elaborate drama than the previous film as Kenshin faces off against Shishio, who plans to rule over all of Japan.
