The well known Radio Kaikan building in Akihabara, which was built in 1957 and was closed in August 2011 to be torn down and rebuilt, is finally having its long-awaited grand reopening on July 20.

The previous Radio Kaikan building, which towered in front of Akihabara Station, was an Akihabara landmark and is famous for appearing in the popular game Steins;Gate when a satellite crashed into it. Headlines were even made when this was recreated in real life before the building’s closure.

The new Radio Kaikan, poised to become a new landmark of Akihabara, is bigger and better then ever with two below-ground floors and 10 above-ground floors. A pre opening event will be held on July 18 for members of the press and other authorized personnel.

It is still unknown which tenants will enter the building after its grand reopening and what will become of the temporary shops selling figures and other hobby items, dolls, electronic parts, and more.

Look forward to the reopening this July.
