Space Brothers Manga Exhibit: Replicas and Original Illustrations

Popular Japanese manga “Space Brothers,” depicting a story about two brothers dreaming of becoming astronauts together, will hold its first large scale exhibit. The exhibit will begin at Nihonbashi Mitsukoshi main store and tour Japan.

The exhibit honors the wishes of the author Chuya Koyama of sparking children’s interest in outer space. Approx. 200 original illustrations will go on display for the first time. Materials relating to the TV anime series and replicas of space uniforms and models of rockets borrowed from Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) will also be showcased. The exhibits can be photographed, and visitors can also enjoy taking photos dressed up in space uniforms. In addition, an audio guide with voice recordings of the voice actors playing the two main characters Mutta and Hibito Namba communicate the charms of the manga and space travel.

The manga began as a series for the magazine “Morning” from Kodansha in 2008. In 2011, it won the Shogakukan Manga Award and the Kodansha Manga Award. With a total number exceeding 14 million copies, the popularity of the manga is ceaseless. Since April 2012, the anime adaptation has been airing on TV. A live film was also created the same year, starring Shun Oguri and Masaki Okada. The anime is scheduled to become a movie in the summer of this year.
