The city of Hakone, Kanagawa Prefecture, which is known as the stage of Evangelion: 3.0 You Can (Not) Redo, will be taking part in a surprising collaboration with the same movie. The city is planning to introduce Evangelion designs to the number plates it issues.

The plates will be issued from March 25 at the city’s taxation department counter. They also accept change requests of the actual plate from applicants. However, the total number of Evangelion plates including motorized bicycles and mini cars is only 390. There are 769 vehicles registered in town (as of Feb. 14, 2014), and the plates are expected to be very popular.

According to Hakone, this collaboration was born from the fact that one of the city’s main districts, Sengokuhara, appears as the Tokyo-3 in the franchise. The town would like to connect the making of these unique number plates to tourism PR. The city has also made efforts before, which came in various shapes such as distributing “Evangelion Hakone Hokan Maps” and organizing a stamp rally. This collaboration took it even further; it was quite a surprise.

The design will contain features of both Evangelion and Hakone. It features Evangelion Unit-01 with silhouettes characteristic to Hakone in the background: Mt. Fuji, Futago-yama (the Twin Mountains), a torii, and Lake Ashi. It comes in four colors in accordance with the type of the vehicle: white, yellow, pink, and blue. They look magnificent just being lined up. For the procedure of issuing and other details, you can check the official site of Hakone.
