The award-winning works of the 17th Japan Media Arts Festival will be the focus of attention at the National Art Center in Roppongi, Tokyo from Feb. 5-16. The Japan Media Arts Festival is a yearly event that brings together a wide variety of works, from art to entertainment. This year as well, an abundant variety of works were gathered in the categories of Art, Entertainment, Animation, and Manga. The current climate of media arts was reflected through such works created by a variety of artists and creators within Japan and abroad.

Roughly 90 programs including screenings, talk events, performances, and workshops are planned to be held throughout the exhibit. Screening events of works from the animation category will be held at Cinemart Roppongi. These include the Grand Prize winning Approved for Adoption, and the Award of Excellence winners Golden Time, The Eccentric Family, and Patema Inverted. Discussions with the creators and judges will also be held at these screenings.

Programs from overseas film festivals such as the Annecy International Animated Film Festival of works including The Burning Buddha Man, winner of the Award of Excellence in the entertainment category, and videos from the art category will also be screened. The short animation program will include the talked-about works Kick-Heart and Shashinkan, both of which were honorable mentions. These programs will give an outline of 2013’s animations.

A “Manga Live Rally” will also be prepared at the first floor entrance of Cinemart Roppongi. In this area, patrons will be able to freely read the award-winning works and honorable mentions from the manga category. In addition to print volumes, online versions will also be available to read on computers and tablets.

Additional events will include workshops in which attendees can experience the creation process, demonstrations at which authors will perform their works, symposiums featuring presentations by award winners, and even more.

All of the programs and events of the 17th Japan Media Arts Festival Award-Winning Works Exhibit will be free to attend. However, a portion of the events must be signed up for in advance. More information can be found on the official site (Japanese only).
