A TV anime for the project Magica Wars ( Mahō Shōjo Taisen ) has been greenlit. The anime will begin broadcasting next April. Producing the anime is Gainax, which is famous for Neon Genesis Evangelion and Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann. Due to the project’s surprising theme and the participation of an anime studio that has created such popular works, it seems this anime will be picking up buzz leading up to its broadcast next spring. Detailed information on the cast and broadcast channels will be announced in anime magazines on sale Dec. 10.
Magica Wars started in 2012 as a user-participation project on the otaku information variety show 2.5 Dimension TV. In June of that year, the SNS illustration site Pixiv held a contest called “Magica Wars Illustration Contest” to which a surprising 3,248 people submitted illustrations.
Along with the announcement of the TV anime, a portion of the character designs have been released. We wonder what kind of tales will be spun for these highly unique characters. Look forward to even more information in the coming weeks.
Also matching up with this announcement, Pixiv is currently holding the “2nd Magica Wars Illustration Contest.” The winner of the contest will be given the privilege of having their magical girl appear in the anime. Even for this second round it seems a variety of magical girls are being submitted. The deadline for the contest is Jan. 29, 2014.
Other than the TV anime, the project is being developed into a variety of content. A Magica Wars pack for the New Year’s card software Fudemame that can only be obtained from DMM.com has been prepared. In addition, the smartphone browser game Magica Wars Tactics and the high-speed touch shooting game app Magica Wars Lock-On for the iOS will both be released this month. Each game offers advance registration, and those who register early will receive a special item as a present.
