Japacon TV #15 - Part 5 Introduction

Japacon TV is a show that is on the forefront of the Japanese content industry and broadcasts at 12:00 a.m. every Friday on the Japanese satellite broadcast channel BS Fuji. We continue with the fifth part of Episode 15, “This is the Way the Game Industry Thrives.” Continuing from Part 4, the crowdfunded game Monken is again discussed.

A big characteristic of Monken is that players are able to freely use it to create derivative works. This has given rise to a style that has been unseen in video games up until now. While this doesn’t mean that the creators are forfeiting their rights to the work, it does mean that they have a stance that welcomes anyone creating goods and other derivative products without having to obtain permission.

As an example of this, fashion brand Mars 16, which sponsors the countrywide event Wonder T-Shirt Festival (Neo) at which the No. 1 T-shirt brand is decided, has introduced T-shirts designed after Monken. Novel experiments that give rise to collaborative content between the game’s creators and creators of derivative works, such as sales promotions involving the creators of Monken appearing at stores, are also being held.

It seems there is a common point between the goals that Monken is striving for and those of Capcom from Parts 1-3...
