Katsuhiro Otomo’s son, Shohei, Creates a Drawing too Beautiful for Words Using Only a Pen

An online-exclusive movie by Pilot Corporation released in July is picking up amazing popularity. The heart-skipping movie depicts a drawing being created solely with the use of a single pen.

The pen used in the video is the “Justus 95,” which costs 31,500 yen. The characteristic of this pen is the ability to freely adjust the nibs, allowing the user to enjoy various writing or drawing styles. In the video, the drawing is created amid a backdrop of grand classical music. The delicate differences that can be achieved with this pen, as well as the awe-inspiring level of detail attained in the drawing are both surprising. The complete drawing fully shown at the end is hinted at throughout the video by the music flowing in the background: “25th Symphony in G Minor” used in the movie Amadeus.

Shohei (Shohei Otomo), the creator of the drawing, is a highly praised illustrator both within Japan and abroad and is actually the son of Katsuhiro Otomo. Of course, this video wouldn’t have been possible without him. A making-of video has also been released in which it is divulged that the drawing took over 21 hours of continuous work to produce.
