The opening video to the anime JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure, which broadcast from Oct. 2012 to April 2013, has picked up huge amounts of attention for its overwhelming visuals that fuse the world of the original work with the style of the anime. This highly acclaimed video was created by animation production company Kamikazedouga. Now, this opening and Kamikazedouga have both been nominated in the visual arts category for the 2013 CEDEC Awards. These awards are mainly given to video game works and game developers, so this nomination from the world of anime is indeed unusual.
The CEDEC Awards were created in 2009 with the goal of spreading game development techniques and developing the industry. Awards in the visual arts category are given to those who create outstanding videos. According to a representative of the CEDEC Awards, this video was nominated due to its “fusion of 2D-expressed animation characters and bold production that makes use of 3D space.” It was also said that the video “arranges the world of JoJo in a more characteristic way and surpasses the image that readers have created to deliver a production with a pleasant sense of speed. It possesses power to fascinate not just fans but regular viewers as well.” The artistic strength that Kamikazedouga displays in the video was also praised: “This magnificently sublime video, with its charming fusion of 2D-expressed animation characters and bold production that makes use of 3D space, possesses all the touches of the original work drawn by Hirohiko Araki. Surely, Kamikazedouga is showing their true worth here.”
To date, winners in the Visual Arts category include the games Journey and Ico, but a nomination from outside the realm of gaming is rare. The winners of CEDEC Awards 2013 will be announced when the award ceremony is held on Aug. 22 in the main hall at the Pacifico Yokohama Conference Center.
