A popular game genre of Japan is hunting action in which players battle gigantic monsters and receive raw materials and equipment after battle to be used to strengthen themselves to pursue stronger monsters. Currently, the PS Vita comes to mind when speaking about hardware that specializes in this genre and stirs up the passion of gamers.
The bustling “Kyoutou Gakuen” event was held on June 23 in Tokyo’s Bellesalle Akihabara event hall. Gakuen is the Japanese word for school, which was the theme of the event. The PS Vita hunting action games Soul Sacrifice, Toukiden, Ragnarok Odyssey Ace, and Dragon's Crown were all assembled in one place, and the idea was for participants to become “students gathered at school” and challenge themselves with an exam related to the games.
The contents of the exam consisted of skills needed to play the games and notes regarding hints scattered around the assembly hall required for answering the exam. Because those who passed the exam would received a special gift, seizing the controllers with a serious face, participants took the examination paper in hand and ran around the event hall to complete it.
The event began at 10:30 a.m. and lasted for about nine hours. The event hall was packed with fans for the entire duration of the event. The game demo booths were a huge success, and some of them even had a one hour wait. The latest information for each game was revealed as part of a stage event, costumes used in CMs were on display, concept art was drawn on chalkboards by students from a College of Arts as a performance, and “Kyoutou Pan,” “Kyoutou Gakuen”-themed bread, was sold exclusively at the event for friends to share and eat. In addition to the exam, the event was packed with activities and content for fans to enjoy. It was a day hunting game fans and also those not yet familiar with the PS Vita could both fully enjoy.
From this event on, various “Kyoutou Gakuen” projects are planned. For those who didn’t get to participate this time, please look forward to the next opportunity!
