New “Sailor Moon” Musical Planned, All New Cast Announced!

The Sailor Moon musicals, which dominated the generation from 1993-2005, will be returning this year with a new musical titled “Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon.” This announcement was made by Dwango, Kodansha, and Nelke Planning. From Sep. 13-23, the musical will be held in AiiA Theater Tokyo. Over 27 variations of the Sailor Moon musicals have been made to date, spanning over 800 performances.

In 1992, Naoko Takeuchi’s manga Sailor Moon began serialization in Kodansha's monthly magazine Nakayoshi. Since then, the work has spanned manga, anime, live-action works, and merchandise. It is likely that you also grew up with these magical girls since Sailor Moon is popular not only in Japan, but throughout the world. This year marks the series’ 20th anniversary, and since it is such a special year, many commemorative projects are being planned throughout the world. This new musical is of them.

For the new musical, almost a completely new staff and cast have been appointed. Satomi Okubo will be debuting as a lead star in the musical as Sailor Moon. Miyabi Matsuura, who won the 1st Junon Girls Contest, will be performing Sailor Mercury, Kanon Nanaki will be performing Sailor Mars, Yuu Takahashi will be performing Sailor Jupiter, and Shiori Sakata will be performing Sailor Venus. Yuga Yamato will be performing Tuxedo Mask. She was active as a top star in Cosmos Troupe for male roles. With this appointment, the musical will have a completely female cast. It’s clear this work won’t just be a simple revival of the musicals, but will be taking on a great number of challenges for a superior performance.

Dwango, which is participating in the production, has had many achievements dealing with performance and internet video distribution. Fans can look forward to plans related to the performance. Advance and door tickets are 6,800 yen each and will become available for purchase next month.
