Mario, Luigi, and Yoshi are all popular characters from Super Mario World. Creators all over the world are inspired by these characters and enjoy using them in their work, whether its illustrations or cosplay. We would like to introduce you to one such creator, Kazuko Hasegawa, who has made models of characters from the world of Mario using empty cans. That’s right, Kazuko creates intricate models of these beloved characters using empty Heineken and Coca Cola cans! Kazuko began crafting these creations in 2007 when she thought to herself one day while taking out the recycling, “What can I make with these?”
Let’s take a quick look at the process Kazuko uses:
1. Print out a papercraft pattern of the character.
2. Cut out each piece of the papercraft pattern and tape it to the cans.
3. Cut the pieces out of the cans and assemble them as you would papercraft.
It’s surprising that Kazuko incorporates papercraft into her work. What’s more surprising though, is that up to 200 empty cans may be needed to complete one model. Drinking that much beer must be quite the chore. Then again, it’s still drinking beer.
The models of Mario, Luigi, and Yoshi were made in 2011 and took two months to create. 50-60 cans were used in the Mario model. After deciding which cans and which parts of the cans to use, as well as how to incorporate the patterns of the cans in the models, Kazuko set out on creating them. Once Kazuko uploaded the finished models to her website, she received an overwhelming amount of responses from people worldwide saying things like “I had no idea you could do such a thing using empty cans!” She also received an overwhelming amount of requests from people in America, Germany, France, England, and the UAE all asking if they could buy the models. Unfortunately though, Kazuko says that she does this for fun and doesn’t plan on selling them.
Kazuko says that she will continue to create these kinds of models. She recently shared with us the papercraft pattern she used for the Mario model, and we’re going to share it with you. So, all you have to do is drink an exorbitant amount of beer or cola and you can try making your own! Though you might need some Red Bull too.
