North American manga readers, rejoice! You can now read your favorite manga on the same day they are released in Japan!
VIZ Media, the largest publisher, distributor, and licensor of manga, graphic novels, and anime in North America, has announced the arrival of the new WEEKLY SHONEN JUMP digital magazine. The magazine is the counterpart to the Japanese Weekly Shonen Jump, which features popular manga such as Naruto, Bleach, and One Piece. The new English WEEKLY SHONEN JUMP is groundbreaking because for the first time the magazine will be released simultaneously with its Japanese counterpart.
Paving the way for this breakthrough was WEEKLY SHONEN JUMP’s predecessor, WEEKLY SHONEN JUMP ALPHA. According to Editor-in-Chief Andy Nakatani, this phase of WEEKLY SHONEN JUMP marked the magazine’s transition to a digital medium and was responsible for attracting thousands of new readers. With the release of the new WEEKLY SHONEN JUMP, North American manga fans will no longer have to wait to be able to read their favorite manga after they are released in Japan; for the first time, they will be able to read them on the same day as fans in Japan.
The first issue of WEEKLY SHONEN JUMP is available now on the VIZ Manga digital platform. Each issue will feature the latest installments of Bleach, Cross Manage, Naruto, Nisekoi, One Piece, and Toriko released simultaneously with Japan, and monthly series such as Blue Exorcist, Rurouni Kenshin: Restoration, and Yu-Gi-Oh! Zexal released on the Monday following their Japan release. For an annual membership cost of $25.99 (USD/CAD), members will receive permanent access to 48 issues per year. Also included with the membership are exclusive Yu-Gi-Oh! trading cards which will be gifted periodically throughout the year, as well as access to additional content including interviews and promotional videos.
Editor-in-Chief Nakatani calls this new phase of WEEKLY SHONEN JUMP “the beginning of an exciting new era in international digital manga publishing.” We couldn’t agree more.
