Nintama Rantarou Natsuyasumi Shukudai Daisakusen! no Dan, a live-action movie based on Soube Amako’s original work, Rakudai Ninja Rantarou, will be released in July 2013. Rakudai Ninja Rantarou is a best selling work, with more than 8.7 million copies in circulation. The TV anime for the series began airing in 1993, and since then has become a long-running hit, spanning more than 1500 episodes. The new movie is set to launch 20 years after the start of the TV anime.
The story centers around Rantarou and his ninja apprentice friends as they are tasked with retrieving Gokurakumaru - a mystical sword with which, it is said, the wielder shall rule the world. However, other ninja from Dokutake Castle and beyond, are also searching for the sword. A mystical character bent on world domination, Kuromaku, is also introduced. Can Rantarou and his friends escape the brawl and complete their mission? You’ll have to wait until this July to find out.
The main character, Rantarou, will be played by Kiyoshirou Katou, who is famous for his work in the long-running historical drama series Tenchijin. The movie will be directed by Ryuta Tasaki, who has received high renown for his involvement in such works as Kamen Rider Agito, Kamen Rider 555, and Gamera the Brave.
