Almost a week has passed since we visited Good Smile Fest 2026 on June 5th for their press day. We've had enough time to sort through our photos and share which figures we found the most interesting!

Good Smile Fest 2026 took place at the Bellesalle building in Akihabara. It's a celebration of Good Smile Company's history, present, and future. You'll see everything from iconic Nendoroid figures, Pop Up Parade merch, new figma, upcoming Hatsune Miku figures, Good Smile Racing, concept figure brands, and more.

We've narrowed the nearly 200 pictures we took to around 70 or so, and we hope you enjoy seeing what's next from GSC. Let us know what figures you're looking forward to on our social media!

Taking part in fandom events in Japan is exciting, and being able to do so as your favorite character sounds even more fun! But before you start packing up all your props and costumes, keep in mind that there are some restrictions at Japanese cosplay events that other countries might not have.

As a basic rule: No cosplaying in public—unless it’s at an event. Even if you see cosplay at a park or restaurant on social media, chances are it was part of an event venue. Plus not all anime-related events allow cosplay. Save yourself the fandom faux pas by keeping these points in mind.

1. Be sure cosplay is allowed.

You’d expect major events like Anime Japan, Comiket, and EVO to be open to cosplay the way conventions are in other countries. And yes you can cosplay, but with limitations. First off, cosplaying at events usually requires advance registration and charges a fee. Big events that draw a huge audience will often have their cosplay guideline up in other languages or at the very least English and Japanese. Some events like certain doujin markets might outright prohibit cosplay entirely so always check to make sure it’s allowed!

Certain theme parks also have special cosplay event days where visitors are encouraged to come dressed up. Just be sure to have the right dates when you plan to visit and look up what kind of cosplay is allowed.

2. Avoid cosplay until you get to the event/venue.

This is usually listed in event guidelines, too, but something to always remember in general. A good rule of thumb: if it’s not something you’d wear day-to-day in Japan, just change into it at the venue or cover it up. But in case your costume does involve everyday clothes, it should be okay on the bus or train—as long as it doesn’t look like cosplay. Just be sure to don any other accessories or props at the venue.

And be careful of outfits that might show more skin especially when you’re taking public transportation, even though they might count as regular clothes. If you do have a “revealing” outfit, some events do require skin coverage so be sure to have foundation, tights, and other relevant items to avoid breaking any rules.

3. Check for prop rules and regulations.

We’ve seen some pretty impressive cosplay, not just costumes but also props involved. And we know there are tons of talented cosplayers who’ve even learned programming and engineering to bring their cosplay creations to life. However, while it’s expected at events overseas, a lot of events in Japan will have limits on the size and type of props you can bring. It’s a good idea to look at the event’s page to see what you’re allowed to bring for your character.

4. Remain mindful of photography.

Essential code of conduct: if you want to take a photo of a cosplayer, ask for their permission instead of snapping a pic without their consent. You’ve probably seen clips and photos from Japan that have faces blurred or covered. This is to respect people’s privacy and, for the media, required by law unless you get someone’s implicit permission to show their face. And it goes both ways!

As a cosplayer, you’re allowed to refuse having your photo taken. And in case anyone’s giving you issues over it, you have the right to notify event staff or security. And some events have certain rules regarding copyright, reproduction, and distribution of photographs (e.g. being published as part of a cosplay doujin) so be sure to confirm with the event’s guidelines if you plan to publish photos commercially.

5. Know the right place and the right time.

Remember when we said no cosplaying in public? Generally it’s frowned upon to have a full photoshoot setup in a park or on the street. And if you really need to have that kind of cosplay photoshoot done, you’ll need to have the proper permits to do so. But wearing cosplay that can pass off as an everyday look and taking a quick pic with your phone should be okay as long as you’re not blocking walkways or disrupting businesses. However, taking part in cosplay events will allow you to take photos at really nice locations. Just be sure to stay within the areas where cosplayers and photography are allowed.

Some businesses like resorts and hotels also hold special cosplay days to let cosplayers and photographers use their facilities and surrounding property as backdrops for photoshoots. These places do tend to be outside cities, though, so be prepared to travel.

And finally, there’s always the option of renting out special studios dedicated to cosplay use. Prices will vary depending on how long the session is and what other equipment or props you might need, and it’s highly recommended to split the fee with other cosplayers if you can get a group together.

With all that in mind, there are so many ways to take part in cosplay when you visit Japan. There are even chances to volunteer to help the community like picking up trash around the event venues and neighborhoods in cosplay. Just remember to look up what the organizers allow. These events are also opportunities to make friends with other cosplayers who can teach you more about the Japanese cosplay scene.

Blue Archive Chinatsu 1/7 Scale Figure

The figure is based on a simple standing pose that has been carefully and faithfully recreated down to the tiniest details using precise sculpting and paintwork.

The details of her adorable and dignified features, as well as her physique showing through her school uniform have been carefully sculpted. Her rifle, Support Pointer, a medical bag filled with emergency supplies and other small items have also been carefully brought to life in figure form.

[Paintwork]
Her hair has been painted with an orangey brown base that gradates into a light pink at the tips. The eye-catching shade of red used in some parts of the figure has also been carefully selected.

[Product Planning and Development]
For items such as the glasses and guns, molds were created from the prototype. This ensures that the final product remains as close as possible to the original sculpt.

Arca Nadea Soffiera (Re-run)

From Kotobukiya’s new sci-fi fantasy series, ARCANADEA, the Dears with a devilish form, Soffiera, joins the plastic model kit lineup!

The model is based on an original illustration by necömi, a popular illustrator known for her video game and VTuber character designs.

By changing out certain parts, the model can be assembled in "Normal Mode" or "Wilize Mode" when in combat. The model is equipped with several 3mm joints, making it compatible with parts from other Kotobukiya original series.

Included Items & Features:
・The model can be assembled in "Normal Mode" or in the combat-ready "Wilize Mode" by changing out certain points.
・The kit includes four face parts that have been pre-printed with tampography.
・Decals are included for users to create their preferred expressions.
・The ears can be exchanged with other Dears such as Lumitea.
・The tail can be adjusted freely, both at the joint on the base and at each of the sections.

Normal Mode:

・Thanks to the joint parts at the base of the devilish wings on her back, the design is kept beautiful and organic while also maintaining the model's high poseability.
・The magic circle connection part for the wings is a HEXA G-R.A.M. joint with a 3mm connection point in the middle for durability.
・The “Normal Mode” leg parts use pop-out joints for the knee that can’t be seen from the front when the model is standing, maintaining the shape of the legs while providing a wide range of movement.

Wilize Mode:
・The upper arm armor parts can be attached to various places on the model using the 3mm connection joints.
・The tips of the four different sized wings on her lower back are made of clear material.
・The main wings can be removed and used freely as weapons such as a short sword, dual blades, autonomous weapons, and more in various settings.
・The four different sized tail feathers are connected via a 3mm ball joint at the base of each connection joint, allowing them to be adjusted freely to match Soffiera’s pose.
・A special weapon that can be transformed between a large scythe and large scissors is included.
・A special stand is included.
・The kit includes five sets of PVC hand parts.
・The 3mm connection joints on the model are compatible with parts from the M.S.G, Frame Arms, and Frame Arms Girl series.
・The kit includes neck parts for attaching heads from the Frame Arms Girl and Megami Device series.

I didn't know yet. That I would be traveling with her from now on. Her name is Amnesia.

Amnesia, who appeared at the end of episode 12 of the TV anime "Wandering Witch: The Journey of Elaina," has finally been made into a 1/7 scale figure based on the color illustration used in volume 4 of the original novel.

Picking a new anime to watch can be a bit overwhelming with so many available out there. If you’re looking to get into a genre as prolific as mecha anime, it definitely feels like there’s just too much to choose from. The Gundam series and Neon Genesis Evangelion are instant recommendations for anime newbies, but we’ve got a few more for you to check out!

Director Tadao Nagahama’s Robot Romance Trilogy refers to three different, unrelated mecha anime: Combattler V, Chōdenji Machine Voltes V, and Tōshō Daimos. These three helped establish more character-driven narratives and pushed what storytelling could be in the mecha genre.

Long-time anime fans outside Japan might know Beast King GoLion by another name: Voltron. While it wasn’t extremely popular in Japan, it became one of the biggest gateway anime for overseas viewers in its time.

Gundam creator Yoshiyuki Tomino had several other mecha series outside of the Gundam franchise. Aura Battler Dunbine was his first to feature organic mecha, and it’s often lauded as the first isekai anime.

Speaking of gateway anime, Robotech was one of the early anime series that introduced mecha and anime in general to Western audiences. But it’s actually adapted from three different Japanese series: Super Dimension Fortress Macross, Super Dimension Cavalry Southern Cross, and Genesis Climber Mospeada.

A lot of mecha anime from the ‘80s came out as original video animation (OVA) with Megazone 23 and Bubblegum Crisis being popular titles that mixed cyberpunk elements with mecha-type exoskeleton suits. The latter also inspired the 1992 anime Tenchi Muyo!

While many early mecha anime used robots for large-scale action and stories, the Patlabor franchise added a more real-life aspect to the use of robots. A number of Patlabor shows and films have been released since it began with Patlabor: The Early Days, and the first installment of the new show Patlabor EZY is set to come out this year.

Clamp’s Magic Knight Rayearth series took the mecha and magical girl genres and fused them together in a fantasy isekai story. To celebrate its 30th anniversary, a new anime remake will launch later this year.

The Vision of Escaflowne is another series that merged mecha action with fantasy elements. It performed really well overseas and was the starting point for composer Yoko Kanno’s collaborative work with voice actress Maaya Sakamoto.

Brain Powerd is another series where Tomino delves into biomechanical mecha. Although the show has garnered mixed reviews, fans of Tomino’s works say this series marks a major transition between his earlier works to later ones. And with Yoko Kanno on the soundtrack, Brain Powerd is packed with great background music.

Mecha fans have lauded mecha designer Kanetake Ebikawa’s technical work on Full Metal Panic!. However, viewers who are just getting into the mecha genre might enjoy the show for its high school romcom elements and more grounded approach to sci-fi.

One of the most highly praised anime of all time, Code Geass is a fantasy-mecha anime that takes on some pretty serious themes. Director Gorō Taniguchi’s storytelling and Clamp’s distinct character design really make Code Geass a uniquely original anime.

Although Gurren Lagann and Code Geass were on air around the same time, these two shows handled the mecha genre very differently. Gurren Lagann had a very different approach with director Hiroyuki Imaishi’s notable animation style. It will appeal to viewers who prefer lighthearted adventures but still gives a compelling story with serious and heartbreaking moments.

Finally, viewers who prefer drama and heavier themes can get behind the story 86 -Eighty Six- has to offer. The mecha designs are also quite unique compared to the more common humanoid types found in other anime within the genre.

SEGA opened「SEGA 65th THE LIMITED SHOP」at “Park in Park” on the first floor of MIYASHITA PARK in Shibuya on May 21, 2026, and it will stay open through May 28, 2026. It’s a huge collaborative effort between SEGA and popular artists and designers that celebrates 65 years of SEGA’s treasured history with exclusive anniversary merchandise and collaboration goods.

Tokyo Otaku Mode was invited to visit the shop on its press day, and here’s our breakdown. First, we’ll take a look at the atmosphere, and then we’ll showcase the merchandise available at「SEGA 65th THE LIMITED SHOP」.

Where Contemporary Meets Retro

Simply put, 「SEGA 65th THE LIMITED SHOP」has great vibes and can be enjoyed by newcomers, longtime SEGA fans, and visitors just looking for a good browsing experience thanks to the collaborative art on display.

You’re immediately greeted by the sight of old CRT televisions and large art displays when you walk inside the gray and blue industrial store space. Music from Sonic Adventure 2, Crazy Taxi, Like a Dragon, and other songs play in the background. Iconic imagery of the Dreamcast, Sonic the Hedgehog, and other characters enter your eyesight. Before you realize it, the wave of nostalgia has transported you into a 90s time capsule, bringing back memories of the time you first discovered SEGA.

HYOTA SHIGE, from the art collective [ALL OVER], was in charge of designing the shop’s layout and atmosphere, while Anique Inc. planned and produced「SEGA 65th THE LIMITED SHOP」in partnership with SEGA. From the shop’s key visual art to its interior design, a large focus was placed on artistic vision and crafting an atmosphere that makes you feel like you stepped into an “experience”. It’s a cohesive environment that connects people and culture thanks to SEGA’s global reputation.

The shop’s atmosphere also reminds you of what it was like to just “play” games as a kid, the fun nature of exploration, the sounds of adventure, and discovering something new like you’ll experience seeing the exhibited artwork.

A New Perspective on Classic IP

The merchandise at「SEGA 65th THE LIMITED SHOP」was designed specifically for this event, and it’s a great way to take a piece of SEGA’s history with you. Best friends. Siblings. Partners. The connection between two people that grows from getting through hard times really makes for a compelling story. And there’s a lot of anime that do it really well. Let’s go over some of our top buddy anime!

We’re kicking off this list with one of our favorite anime series of all time: Hagane no Renkinjutsushi or Fullmetal Alchemist. Created by Hiromu Arakawa, the show follows the Elric brothers Edward and Alphonse on their quest to return to their original human forms. Viewers get the choice of watching the first anime adaptation Fullmetal Alchemist (2003) or Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood (2009). They each handle the story a bit differently with Brotherhood being more faithful to the manga, but both still showcase the strength of the Elric brothers’ bond.

Yomi no Tsugai (Daemons of the Shadow Realm) is Arakawa’s current ongoing series with another pair of siblings: twins Yuru and Asa who are born with a prophecy tied to their powerful abilities to control supernatural beings called tsugai. But without spoiling anything since the anime just started recently, this story handles the sibling dynamic a bit differently compared to Arakawa’s previous work.

Tiger and Bunny pairs two clashing personalities in classic buddy genre form. Longtime superhero Kotetsu T. Kaburagi reluctantly takes on rookie Barnaby Brooks Jr. as his partner and the two are forced to work together to fight crime. And in a world where heroes are sponsored by corporations and ranked on their performance, these two constantly butt heads with their different viewpoints. Fans of superhero movies and action-packed anime will enjoy the fresh spin the show puts on the superhero journey.

From legendary Cowboy Bebop director Shinichiro Watanabe comes Carole & Tuesday, a sci-fi musical drama set in Mars. The story follows two musicians from different backgrounds who decide to pursue their dreams together. Like with Watanabe’s other works, Carole & Tuesday blends beautiful animation with a soundtrack that works really well with the story.

Buddy Daddies is a 12-episode original anime series about Kazuki Kurusu and Rei Suwa, a pair of assassins whose mission unconventionally leads them to caring for four-year-old Miri. Between the struggles of parenting and the dangers of their jobs, Kazuki and Rei have to work together to raise Miri and to protect the found family they’ve formed together.

If cute characters and tons of action are more your speed, Lycoris Recoil has you covered. Serious Takina Inoue ends up working alongside the cheerful Chisato Nishikigi at Cafe LycoReco where they’re part of an undercover organization tasked to keep Japan safe. Think of a grump-meets-sunshine pairing who get involved in tons of gunfight scenes throughout the show.

Angels and sisters Panty and Stocking are kicked out of Heaven and end up hunting ghosts on Earth in Panty & Stocking with Garterbelt. Taking inspiration from Western adult animated shows, the series has been rather divisive among anime fans with its adult sense of humor. However, if you enjoyed director Hiroyuki Imaishi’s other works like Gurren Lagan and Kill la Kill, Panty & Stocking’s unique animation style and collection of characters might be for you.

Finally, let’s finish off with one more new series from this year: Marriagetoxin. Another assassin-focused action title, this one follows Hikaru Gero as he tries to save his sister from being forced to marry and continue their family line. He enlists the help of con artist Mei Kinosaki to help him find a wife. Only a few episodes have been released so far, and we’re looking forward to the rest of the season to see where this action-romcom takes us.

Japan holds numerous otaku-related events throughout the year, enticing anime and manga fans alike from all over the country and even around the world. The biggest and most popular of these is Comic Market (コミックマーケット), also known as Comiket (コミケ), which is held twice a year at Tokyo Big Sight. While comparable in size to US conventions like Anime Expo or Comic Con, Comiket isn’t quite the same. In Japan, it’s classified as a doujinshi sokubaikai (同人誌即売会) or doujinshi sales event.

Doujinshi (同人誌) are non-commercial self-published bound works. They often include comics, short stories, and art books. Although one hall for Comiket now houses booths for major companies like Good Smile Company and Bandai Namco selling event-exclusive merch, a separate hall contains doujin circles (同人サークル)—or “circles” for short—which are the groups or individuals selling doujinshi.

But did you know there’s more to doujinshi than just comics? Doujinban (同人版) is a catchall term for other works that might be found at these events. These include game software, drama CDs, music CDs, and other goods inspired by whatever anime, game, or character they’re into.

When attending a doujinshi event, fans of a particular circle or creator can get an event catalog to find their favorites easily. A lot of popular artists and writers in a fandom will often post their table number or circle name if they are participating in an event. In fact, sometimes even the original artists and writers of a commercially well-known series will form a circle to participate.

People who’ve been to artist alleys and dealers rooms at conventions in other countries might find this familiar. Is doujinshi basically like fanart? Technically, yes, since it’s fan-created work that’s derived from existing IPs. However, due to strict copyright laws in Japan, selling fan-made works like commissions and non-official merch are not allowed. So how do doujinshi events work?

Some events have doujinshi for VTubers and cosplayers

Doujinshi events are the only spaces where fans can sell their own work inspired by a series. But the caveat is that the makers of the work cannot make a profit from sales. That’s why a lot of doujinshi tend to have low prices and similar pricing as the money they earn would just be enough to cover costs like event registration and production fees. And while anime conventions in other countries allow attendees to roam around in cosplay, that’s not the case at most doujinshi events. At large ones like Comiket, cosplayers must register in order to dress up, and they have to follow guidelines like no cosplay during the commute to the venue. Smaller events strictly prohibit cosplay and only focus on selling doujinshi.

Doujinshi events can cover all kinds of works with some only allowing certain genres or series

Depending on the size and organizer of a doujinshi event, though, only certain types of doujin goods may be allowed. For example, some might only allow printed doujinshi and not handmade goods like keychains or stickers. Events labeled “all genre” (オールジャンル) are open to any fandom, while an “only event” (オンリーイベント) is for a specific genre or series. Fans of popular titles like Haikyu!!, the Fate series, and various 2D idol franchises can expect to find at least one event focused on those IPs. But even a lesser known series could have an only event, just not as often or as big as other doujinshi events. And even though it’s easier to attend comic markets in big cities like Tokyo and Osaka, some organizers still hold events in other parts of Japan.

Doujinshi events aren’t all limited to derivative works, though. Some events like Comitia (コミティア) focus entirely on original creations: manga, posters, keychains, music, etc. While you won’t find goods with your favorite characters at these events, they’re a great opportunity to discover entirely unique works by independent artists.

So next time you plan to visit Japan, be sure to check out what doujinshi events are happening during your trip! They’re a great way to support artists and creators who make fanwork for your favorite anime and to meet other fans. Comiket is held every summer and winter and smaller doujin events happen almost every month. Major events often have ticket info available in English on their websites while others might require some understanding of Japanese, though it is advisable to know a bit of the language or have a way to translate, especially if you plan on buying stuff.
