Traditional Japanese Ukiyo-e Prints
Ukiyo-e woodblock prints (or simply ukiyo-e) first became popular during the Edo period of 17th century Japan. The prints begin with artists creating an image that is then carved on a woodblock by a carver and then later hand pressed on washi paper by a printer. Everything from female beauties, scenes from folk tales, and flowers have become subjects of ukiyo-e.

Classic Echizen Washi
Before woodblocks are even inked, a craftsman must meticulously make by hand the finest traditional Japanese paper for the masterpiece to be printed on. The paper is called Echizen washi. “Echizen” comes from the town name it is said to have originated from more than 1,500 years. Seasoned professionals wash mulberry bark, boil it, combine it with additional all-natural materials, and use a screen to form each perfectly crafted piece of washi paper. Echizen washi is part of what makes ukiyo-e so beautiful.
