About Woody

Woody is one of the central characters in the Toy Story Franchise. He's a cowboy sheriff doll and enjoys his time as one of Andy's favorite toys. Most movie plots involve Woody's many identity crises. By the end of the fourth film, Woody realizes his new dream to help unloved toys find loving homes.

Background

At the beginning of the first film, Woody clearly functions as the leader of Andy's toys. He feels threatened by the presence of the cool new toy, Buzz Lightyear. After weeks of disagreeing, he helps Buzz come to terms with his identity as a toy and the two become close friends. Woody views Andy as his main motivation and often considers what would bring Andy the most joy. After Andy leaves for college, Woody's interests shift more toward the philosophy of being a toy. He ultimately decides that a toy is at its best when bringing a child joy. He chooses to help other toys find their usefulness and bring joy to as many others as possible.

Abilities

While Woody only knows himself as Andy's favorite toy, he is actually a rare collector's item. The Round-Up gang from the 1950s television show, Woody's Roundup, is considered incredibly rare due to the show's abrupt cancellation. Woody's pull-string voice box allows him to say up to nine user-recorded phrases. An authentic Woody's design uses real cloth fabric for his clothing, including his hand-dyed shirt and denim jeans.

Other Important Toy Story Characters

Woody's relationships with other Toy Story characters propel most of the plot development in all four Toy Story movies.

Andy

Andy Davis is Woody's first owner and a major character in the Toy Story franchise. Andy received Woody as one of his first toys. He quickly bonded with him and declared Woody his favorite, writing his name on the bottom of Woody's boot. Throughout the films, Woody's relationship with Andy serves as a major plot point. In Toy Story 3, Andy leaves for college and must decide what to do with his toys. He initially plans on keeping them in storage and taking Woody to school with him. However, he decides to give them away to a child who would love them and play with them as much as he used to.

Jessie

Jessie is a member of the Roundup Gang and a major character in the Toy Story franchise. Woody meets Jessie during the events of Toy Story 2. Jessie once had an owner who she loved as much as Woody loves Andy. However, Jessie's owner slowly lost interest in her and brought her to a charity donation box. The experience traumatized Jessie, giving her a major fear of boxes and cars. Woody convinces Jessie to come back to Andy's with him and feel the joy of being a child's beloved toy again. Jessie develops romantic feelings for Buzz Lightyear upon meeting him, which he immediately reciprocates.

Buzz Lightyear

Buzz Lightyear is the other main protagonist in the Toy Story movies and Woody's best toy friend. At first, Buzz believes he is a living space ranger with no idea that he's actually a toy. He and Woody often fought due to Woody's frustration with and fear of Buzz. After accepting his role as a toy, Buzz becomes much calmer, enjoying his time with Andy and the other toys. At the end of Toy Story 4, Buzz encourages Woody to pursue his dream of helping toys find homes. They go their separate ways.

Bo Peep

Bo Peep is a porcelain figurine modeled after the character "Little Bo Peep." In the first few films, she serves a supporting role but she serves as the deuteragonist of the fourth film. Originally, Bo Peep and her sheep came as attachments of Andy's baby sister's lamp. Bo Peep and Woody have a vaguely flirtatious relationship in the first movie. By the end of the film, they clearly express their love for each other. They reunite in the fourth film and Woody decides to stay with her at the fairgrounds instead of traveling to a new home with the other toys.
