  • Synopsis

    Kazutaka Hyodo, the president of Japan’s biggest consumer finance company Teiai Corporation, is often bored and enjoys nothing more than tormenting his employees. Squeezed middle-manager Yukio Tonegawa has hatched a plan to keep him entertained by recruiting 11 of his “blacksuit” subordinates to “Team Tonegawa” for various strategies to ensure Hyodo’s continued happiness. Battling interventions from the boss, the danger of losing esteem with his subordinates, illness, his subordinates’ mistakes, and worrying about unforeseen accidents, Tonegawa fights on towards the completion of his goal…

Anime Adaptation

Middle Manager Tonegawa is a comedy spin-off to Nobuyuki Fukumoto’s Kaiji franchise written by Tensei Hagiwara with artwork by Tomohiro Hashimoto and Tomoki Miyoshi which has been running in Monthly Young Magazine since 2015. The anime adaptation was announced in February 2018 on the cover of the third volume of the 1-nichi Gaishutsu-roku Hancho manga.

The opening for the first season is “Sassoku to Hashiru Tonegawa-kun” by Gesu no Kiwami Otome, while Pistol Takehara will perform the series’ ending, “Okitegami.”

Characters

Yukio Tonegawa (voiced by Toshiyuki Morikawa)

Yukio Tonegawa is a squeezed middle manager at financial company Teiai Corporation where he finds himself caught between the sadistic chairman Kazutaka Hyodo and the “blacksuit” underlings whose various failings are a constant source of worry.

Kenji Yamazaki (voiced by Wataru Hatano)

A 30-year-old blacksuit who acts as a kind of leader for the others and has direct experience of working for the boss. Yamazaki was originally dissatisfied with Tonegawa’s arrogant management style, but after working together gradually began to warm up to him.

Jirou Saemon-saburou (voiced by Nobunaga Shimazaki)

A 23-year-old blacksuit who was the youngest member of the team before Nishiguchi arrived. Although one of the most capable members, Saemon is also a youngster who likes to take things at his own pace.

Ebitani (voiced by Taku Yashiro)

A 25-year-old blacksuit who is passionate about his work but somewhat directionless.

Hidetoshi Tanaka (voiced by Daiki Hamano)

A 32-year-old blacksuit with an interest in planetariums. Of all the blacksuits, he is the one who loves bowling the most and has trouble reading social cues to the point that he is the only one not to pick up on the romantic drama between Saemon and Nishiguchi.

Gonda (voiced by Rikiya Koyama)

At 49, Gonda is the oldest member of the blacksuits.

Kouji Doushita (voiced by Takuya Eguchi)

A 32-year-old blacksuit and the former captain of his university rugby team.

Keiichi Ogino (voiced by Akira Ishida)

A 35-year-old blacksuit who once dreamed of being a comedian.

Junichi Hagino (voiced by Kengo Kawanishi)

A 35-year-old blacksuit who meets up with Kikuchi and Nagata three times a week as the self-proclaimed center of Team Tonegawa.

Nagata (voiced by Chiharu Sawashiro)

A 37-year-old blacksuit who is part of a study group with Kikuchi and Hagino.

Kikuchi (voiced by Takaya Aoyagi)

A 35-year-old blacksuit who has teamed up with Nagata and Hagino who believe they are the “center” of Team Tonegawa.

Kazutaka Hyodo (voiced by Masane Tsukayama)

President of Teiai Corporation, Hyodo has a moody streak and is particularly hard on Tonegawa but makes sure to reward his team with fried chicken and coleslaw when he’s in a good mood.

Saeko Nishiguchi (voiced by Rena Maeda)

The only female member of the team, 22-year-old Saeko Nishiguchi hails from Hakata.

Masayasu Honda (voiced by Akio Ohtsuka)

Also known as “Masayan,” Honda is Hyodo’s double but has a much nicer personality and has had to undergo training to mimic Hyodo’s meanness.

Ataru Yaotome (voiced by Takuma Terashima)

Ataru Yaotome is a former businessman who joined the company irregularly and quickly got promoted to be Hyodo’s secretary.

Yoshihiro Kurosaki (voiced by Atsushi Miyauchi)

Yoshihiro Kurosaki is Tonegawa’s rival for the number two spot at Teiai.

Yuji Endo (voiced by Kenjiro Tsuda)

Yuji Endo is a yakuza heading up a Teiai affiliate as a front.

Seiya Ichijou (voiced by Daisuke Namikawa)

Seiya Ichijou is the youthful manager of a casino and the inventor of the high stakes pachinko machine “The Bog.”
