Synopsis

After losing his only relative, Kazuya Soma is suddenly summoned to another world. He finds himself in the medieval-like Kingdom of Elfrieden and is viewed as a hero, even though he’s not very heroic. However, with his rational mind and knowledge of the modern world, he comes up with new policies for rebuilding the financial and political systems of the kingdom, which is on the verge of collapse. Due to his prowess, the king even gives up the throne to him! Now, together with the king’s daughter Liscia, the clever-minded Hakuya, a dark elf and superior warrior named Aisha, a glutton named Poncho, a diva named Juna, and a young girl named Tomoe who can speak with animals, he begins using his modern knowledge to revive the kingdom!

Background

How a Realist Hero Rebuilt the Kingdom is a light novel series written by Dojyomaru and illustrated by Fuyuyuki that was first published on the user-generated content platform Shosetsuka ni Naro from 2014 to 2016 and is currently published on Pixiv. The series has also been picked up by Overlap and is published under the Overlap Bunko imprint. It has been released in 13 volumes as of September 2020. The series has been licensed for release in North America by J-Novel Club (digital) and Seven Seas Entertainment (print).

A manga adaptation illustrated by Satoshi Ueda began serialization on Overlaps Comic Gardo website in July 2017 and has been released in five tankobon volumes to date. The manga has been licensed for release in North America by J-Novel Club.

An anime adaptation was announced by Overlap in April 2020. It is being animated by J.C. Staff and features Takashi Watanabe as director with Go Zappa and Hiroshi Ohnogi handling series composition, Mai Otsuka handling character designs, and Akiyuki Tateyama composing the music. The opening theme song is "Hello Horizon" by Inori Minase, and the ending theme song is "Kazania" by Aimi. The anime will premiere in Japan on July 3, 2021 on Tokyo MX and BS11.

Characters

Kazuya Soma (Voiced by: Yusuke Kobayashi)
A young man who is summoned to the otherworldly Kingdom of Elfrieden as a hero. He loves to read history books and is given the throne due to his knowledge and abilities in domestic affairs. He set out on rebuilding the impoverished kingdom together with his new friends.

Liscia Elfrieden (Voiced by: Inori Minase)
The princess of the Kingdom of Elfriedon. Her father Albert, who gave up the throne to Kazuya, makes her his fiancée without her permission. She is suspicious of Kazuya.

Aisha Udgard (Voiced by: Ikumi Hasegawa)
A dark elf who lives in the Forest of Divine Protection in the Kingdom of Elfriedon. She comes before Kazuya and the others to appeal for the plight of her home. She is one of the bravest warriors in the kingdom. She is also devout and will do anything for those to whom she has sworn allegiance.

Juna Doma (Voiced by: Reina Ueda)
The poster girl and songstress of the cafe Lorelei in the Kingdom of Elfriedon. She has beautiful looks and is an excellent singer and dancer. She supports and cooperates with Kazuya’s many measures and his reign as king.

Hakuya Kwonmin (Voiced by: Kazuyuki Okitsu)
The most knowledgeable young man in the kingdom. His insight also makes him skilled at guessing people’s psychology and behaviors. He emerges as Kazuya’s right-hand man and becomes known as the “Prime Minister in Black.”

Tomoe Inui (Voiced by: Moeka Kishimoto)
A young girl from the Mystic Wolf race who washed up in the Kingdom of Elfriedon together with her mother and younger brother as a refugee. She has the rare gift of being able to talk with animals.

Poncho Panacotta (Voiced by: Masaaki Mizunaka)
A food researcher and an unrivaled gourmand. He is extremely knowledgeable about food, and that knowledge has helped the kingdom overcome food shortages.

Georg Carmine (Voiced by: Taiten Kusunoki)
The general of the Kingdom of Elfrieden's Army and one of the Three Lords. He is a fierce beastman who is loyal to his country, but he refused to obey Kazuya when he took the throne.

Excel Walter (Voiced by: Yui Horie)
The general of the Kingdom of Elfrieden's Navy and one of the Three Lords. She is said to be over 500 years old and possesses vast wisdom and courage while also being well versed in politics. She is a skilled leader, but at the same time is youthful and free-spirited.

Castor Vargas (Voiced by: Jun Fukuyama)
The general of the Kingdom of Elfrieden's Air Force and one of the Three Lords. He is a half-dragon dragonewt and is a passionate man who puts his beliefs before his own interests. He suspects Kazuya of usurping the throne.

Carla Vargas (Voiced by: Aimi)
Castor’s daughter. She is a stubborn person who won’t bend once she has made up her mind to do something. She believes that her best friend Liscia was forced to become Kazuya’s fiancée.

Albert Elfrieden (Voiced by: Mugihito)
The former king of the Kingdom of Elfrieden and Liscia’s father. He is usually weak and timid but has the strength of will to keep his faith when the time comes. He sees Kazuya’s strengths and gives up the throne to him.

Elisha Elfrieden (Voiced by: Kikuko Inoue)
The former queen of the Kingdom of Elfrieden and Liscia’s mother. She has a gentle personality and is always smiling. She is convinced of Kazuya's ability to succeed to the throne.

Maria Euphoria (Voiced by: Hisako Kanemoto)
The empress of the Gran Chaos Empire. She is known as a saint due to her beautiful appearance and her philosophy of helping the weak, and she has the overwhelming support of her people. She calls for the entire human race to band together in order to defeat the Demon Lord's Domain.

Jeanne Euphoria (Voiced by: Yui Ishikawa)
Maria’s younger sister. She is the commander-in-chief of the Gran Chaos Empire’s Army. She is a valiant commander and has the courage to infiltrate the enemy’s ranks in order to gain information.

Roroa Amidonia (Voiced by: M.A.O)
The first duchess of the Principality of Amidonia. She is well versed in economics and has her own network of merchants. She differs from her father Gaius, who spends money on nothing but military equipment, and seeks to enrich the lives of the people of Amidonia with her own economic sense.

Gaius Amidonia (Voiced by: Tetsu Inada)
The duke of the Principality of Amidonia. He is a man of unparalleled bravery and believes in winning everything by force. He is looking for an opportunity to regain the territory taken by the previous king’s land expansion policy.

Julius Amidonia (Voiced by: Kenji Nojima)
Gaius’ son and Roroa’s older brother. He is a rational person who can make ruthless decisions without hesitation. Together with his father, he is looking for an opportunity to regain the land that was stolen from them.
