Synopsis

Yu-yu is a 15-year-old boy in his third year of junior high school living in Kanazawa, Kaga Province. He has the ability to sense the feelings of others, but he is troubled by the fact that he cannot say no when asked. One day, fed up with going along with his sister's hobby, he runs away from home. He is saved by Megumi Okura, who invites him to a nighttime amusement park called Wonder Hill where her friends hang out. At the amusement park, Yu-yu meets Megumi, Zakusa Ishikame, and Tomari Seto, who are members of Team Blackout, a group that meets to play Vanguard every night.

Tonight, a serious fight for the team's flag is about to take place. Blackout's leader, Danji Momoyama, and a mysterious and powerful fighter named Tohya Ebata. As Yu-yu faces them, the card fight soon erodes into a world of images. Thus, Yu-yu encounters Vanguard, a world he has never seen before, and is drawn in by its powerful allure as he makes new friends along the way.

Background

Cardfight!! Vanguard overDress is an anime adaptation based on the popular trading card game Cardfight!! Vanguard by Bushiroad. The first season was announced in January 2021 at the “Vanguard Project 2.0 Presentation” and is part of the series’ 10th anniversary project. The anime is a joint project between Kinema Citrus, GIFTanimation, and Studio Jemi and is directed by Ken Mori and executive produced by Takaaki Kidani with character designs by Hiroyuki Saita and music by Hijiri Kuwano. The opening theme song for season 1 is “ZEAL of proud” by Roselia, and the ending theme song is “Y” by Argonavis. The anime premiered in Japan on April 3, 2021 and ran for 12 episodes.

Season 2 of the anime is also being jointly produced by Kinema Citrus, GIFTanimation, Studio Jemi and sees returning staff including Ken Mori as director and series composer, Takaaki Kidani as executive producer, Ryutaro Suzuki as assistant director, Natsuko Takahashi as series composer, Hiroyuki Saita as character designer and chief animation director, Hijiri Kuwano as music composer. The anime will premiere in Japan on Oct. 4, 2021 on TV Tokyo and TV Osaka, and it will also be streamed through Funimation as it airs in Japan as part of their fall lineup.

Characters

Yu-yu Kondo (Voiced by: Shouta Aoi)
A third-year junior high school student living in Kanazawa in Kaga Province. He is drawn into the world of Vanguard after meeting fellow students at a nighttime amusement park. He has good instincts and is very caring, but at the same time, he’s the type who can’t say no.

Danji Momoyama (Voiced by: Yuki Ono)
The leader of Team Blackout. He is a legendary fighter who has won 19 consecutive battles. He is an elusive person, and it’s hard to tell when he’s joking or being serious.

Thoya Ebata (Voiced by: Yuma Uchida)
A powerful fighter with an astonishing win ratio. He is determined to defeat Danji and surpass his abilities. He visits the nighttime amusement park with Masanori.

Megumi Okura (Voiced by: Amane Shindo)
A member of Team Blackout. She calls Danji “Big Bro” and admires him. She has a tomboyish style and hates to lose.

Zakusa Ishikame (Voiced by: Masahiro Ito)
A member of Team Blackout. He has an artistic view of the world and expresses himself creatively. He often speaks and acts eccentrically.

Tomari Seto (Voiced by: Hikaru Tohno)
A member of Team Blackout. She is a self-proclaimed “eternal 17 year old” who becomes a popular MC at the nighttime amusement park. She has a vast knowledge of nearly all Vanguard cards and their effects.

Masanori Iseki (Voiced by: Shuta Morishima)
Thoya’s partner. A suspicious-looking man, he is bald-headed, dresses in a suit, and wears sunglasses. He enjoys people watching and is a bit unusual. He often uses complex words to describe situations and emotions.

Mirei Minai (Voiced by: Yuki Nakashima)
A beautiful and mysterious girl.

Natsuko Kondo (Voiced by: Nanako Mori)
Yu-Yu’s mother. Though married, her husband is usually absent, meaning she raises her three children by herself. She is very youthful not just in appearance but also in how she speaks and behaves.

Yuriko Kondo (Voiced by: Sayaka Senbongi)
Yu-Yu’s older sister. She has a calm personality and a good sense of humor. She often teams up with her little sister Akiko to tease Yu-Yu.

Akiko Kondo (Voiced by: Mirai Sasaki)
Yu-Yu’s second older sister. She has a lively personality and is interested in art and fashion. She is also good at makeup.

Takami Okura (Voiced by: Ryota Osaka)
Megumi’s older brother. Though still young, he is in charge of the Okura family business. He is an old friend of Danji.

Shinobu Kajita (Voiced by: Mariko Higashiuchi)
A boy who visits the nighttime amusement park under a false identity and steals Blackout’s flag.

Haruka Sokawa (Voiced by: Yo Taichi)
A mysterious woman who seems to know something about Danji...
