Synopsis

Yuuki Miaka and Hongou Yui are both third-year middle school students who are preparing to take their high school entrance exams. One day, the two go to a library and are unexpectedly pulled into the world of an ancient book titled "The Universe of the Four Gods". This world is split up into four countries that each worships one of the four Beast Gods: Seiryu, Suzaku, Byakko, and Genbu. As a girl that comes from another world, Miaka holds the power of the Priestess that allows her to summon a Beast God and make three wishes come true. In her adventures, Miaka meets Tamahome and Hotohori, two of the Seven Celestial Warriors of Suzaku, the guardians of the Priestess of Suzaku.

Miaka falls in love with Tamahome, and they give a pledge of love transcending space and time. Meanwhile, Nakago, one of the Celestial Warriors of Seiryu, tricks Yui into becoming the Priestess of Seiryu, scheming to make her summon Seiryu to have his wishes granted. In order to save Yui and return to the real world, Miaka resolves herself to use her powers as a Priestess to summon Suzaku.

Aiming to stop Nakago's schemes, Miaka and the Celestial Warriors of Suzaku search for a sacred treasure called the Shinzaho, which is required to summon a Beast God. Yui steals Shinzaho first and summons Seiryu, however, she changes her mind to help summon Suzaku once she learns of Nakago's nefarious plans. In the end, Suzaku defeats Nakago, and Miaka and Tamahome are bound by a thread of fate. This peace is short-lived, however, as the demon Tenkou begins taking actions in both worlds in order to eliminate Suzaku, scheming to become a god.

Miaka and Tamahome start traveling back and forth in time and space to revive Suzaku and defeat Tenkou.

She lives with her mother and her older brother Yuuki Keisuke, who is a university student. Although she is bad at cooking, she has a massive appetite. When it comes to her personality, she is very innocent and laid-back. Though, in the beginning, her mother put a lot of pressure on her to take her high school entrance exams, which caused her to be dissatisfied. While inside the world of "The Universe of the Four Gods", Miaka searches for the Seven Celestial Warriors of Suzaku and finds them all. She then travels to Hokkan of Genbu and Sairou of Byakko, seeking for Shinzaho that is needed to summon Beast Gods. When she finally summons Suzaku, she uses her first wish to get Hongou Yui back, the second wish to seal Seiryu away, and the third wish to allow Tamahome to be reborn into the real world. After defeating Nakago, Miaka and Yui both enroll at Yotsubadai High School.

Besides being pure and hot-blooded, Tamahome can also be greedy when it comes to money. When Miaka and Yui first enter the world of "The Universe of the Four Gods", Tamahome is the one who saves them. Since he was a young boy, he learned about the Priestess of Suzaku and held a great deal of respect for her. This eventually led to Tamahome falling in love with Miaka, who comes from another world. After they defeat Nakago, Tamahome was reborn into the real world as Sukunami Taka and got together with Miaka. However, when he was reborn, Tenkou stole seven of Tamahome's memories, which makes Taka's existence an incomplete one. To fix this, Taka and Miaka fight against Tenkou to regain his seven memories and resurrect Suzaku.

Although Miaka ends up choosing Tamahome, Hotohori respects her decision and withdraws his advances. When Miaka and Tamahome travel to find the Shinzaho, Hotohori's responsibilities as emperor prevented him from accompanying them. While Miaka and Tamahome are traveling, he marries Empress You Houki, who looks much like Nuriko. The two later have a son, Boushin, but Hotohori, unfortunately, misses his birth and dies in a battle against Nakago. From that point on, Hotohori only exists as a spirit.

Shortly after, she returns to the real world but goes back to the world of the book again when she learns that Miaka is still in danger. Yui is then attacked by bandits and saved by Nakago, who tells her that she was taken advantage of and it was Miaka's fault. After she loses herself due to her hatred towards Miaka, Nakago manipulates her into becoming a Priestess so she can summon Seiryu. Her first wish caused Suzaku to be sealed away for eternity, while her second wish was used to send both Yui and Tamahome back to the real world so that Miaka and Tamahome would break up. After she learns about Nakago's scheme, however, Yui uses her third wish to give Miaka the power to summon Suzaku. Once Nakago was defeated, Yui and Miaka enroll at Yotsubadai High School together and she dates Kajiwara Tetsuya.

He eventually learns that the Priestess of Genbu is Okuda Takiko, the daughter of Okuda Einosuke -- the translator of the Japanese version of "The Universe of the Four Gods". Keisuke also later finds out that Oosugi Suzuno, the daughter of Okuda's best friend, is the Priestess of Byakko.

Although he loved Hotohori at first, he eventually stops wearing women's clothing and fights with the Celestial Warriors of Suzaku as a man. Despite having a slender build, Nuriko has incredible superhuman strength. The Chinese character for "chariot" can be found on his left hand. Mitsukake is 22 years old and stands 199cm tall. Although he has the ability to heal illness and injuries, he failed to save his beloved Shouka when she fell ill, causing him to turn to the life of a hermit. His intelligence, however, disappears when his "Stretch" mark disappears, which happens frequently. After his body is possessed by the Celestial Warrior of Seiryu named Miboshi, Chiriko sacrifices himself, killing both Miboshi and Chiriko. From this point on, Chiriko only exists as a spirit.

He then was brought to the Imperial Court, where he was essentially treated as a slave. He aspires to rule over the world of "The Universe of the Four Gods" and uses Hongou Yui, who comes from another world. After Yui summons Seiryu and seals Suzaku away for eternity, Nakago begins invading Kounan. He eventually returns to Kutou palace and kills its emperor. He believes that his twin brother Amiboshi, who is also a Celestial Warrior of Seiryu, was killed by the Celestial Warriors of Suzaku. This caused Suboshi to attack Miaka's group, following Nakago's order. He also killed Tamahome's family. Suboshi has feelings for Hongou Yui and despises the very sight of Tamahome out of jealousy. After Tamahome became powerless when Yui wished for Suzaku to be sealed away, Suboshi attempted to kill Tamahome. However, the scales were eventually tipped back in favor of the Celestial Warriors of Suzaku, and Suboshi was killed instead.

Taiitsukun

An inhabitant of the world in "The Universe of the Four Gods" who acts as a guide hermit for both Priestesses and Celestial Warriors. Although he was buried along with "The Universe of the Four Gods" scroll and sealed away in a stone grave in the Takamatsuzuka Tomb, his will was transferred to the scroll. Nakago attempts to resurrect Tenkou by using the seven memories of Tamahome that were stolen when he was reborn into the real world. However, Tenkou is subsequently defeated by the Seven Celestial Warriors of Suzaku and Miaka.
