Interview with LiSA: The Source of Her Energetic Performances is Her Strong Relationship with Her Fans?!

Have you seen the Music Video Recorder x AFA videos that were released just the other day?
This set of interview articles is a collaboration with Tokyo Otaku Mode and MTV 81 and will be released simultaneously to both sites! We had the opportunity to interview LiSA and Eir Aoi, both of whom had especially powerful performances at AFA. Here are our interviews.

TOM: Your performance was very energetic. Have you always been such an energetic person?

LiSA: It’s because I play lively music, and I live every day by saying “Today is another great day.” I’m also someone who has a cheerful personality.

TOM: During your performance, you were shot from all angles with 40 Sony MVRs. What did you think when you saw the edited video?

LiSA: It was very exciting; my eyes were glued to the screen. The sense of lighting from the concert was unchanged, and the video was so pretty! The sense of atmosphere was captured just as it was at the concert; my heart was racing a mile a minute.

TOM: Are there any interesting angles or scenes that stand out?

LiSA: Angles shot from below and scenes taken from the side, and the shots I got with fans while holding one of the cameras. I used it even at rehearsal, and my band members as well were constantly shooting with it. Even the sound was incredible.

TOM: You seem to close with Eir Aoi. How did you two first meet?

LiSA: Two and a half years ago, I did the OP for the anime Fate/Zero and Eir-chan did the ED. Around that time, she came to my events a few times, and we went together to a Fate/Zero event.

TOM: What kind of impression did you have of Eir Aoi at that time?

LiSA: I thought she was a tiny and cute girl. But two and a half years later, she’s an awful lot like a puppy (laughs).

TOM: If she’s a puppy, then what are you?

LiSA: I’m a cat. I have a moody side to me and I enjoy being alone.

TOM: What was your favorite anime when you were a child?

LiSA: Let’s see…*Sailor Moon*?

TOM: So the same as Eir Aoi (laughs). Amazing! What did you like about it?

LiSA: I like that the main character Usagi-chan isn’t strong. She’s able to become strong with the help of all her friends and Tuxedo Mask, and I really like that she tries her absolute best and fights to protect her friends.

TOM: What do the anime characters you like have in common?

LiSA: First, they’re cute (laughs). I also really like Disney, and I enjoy things with a slightly different touch, like Beauty and the Beast and Monsters, Inc.

TOM: Has this had any influence on you?

LiSA: With Disney, definitely the music, I think. I like that throughout the work, the characters express their feelings not through words, but through song.

TOM: You debuted in the fictional band Girls Dead Monster 1 and sang songs as a character. Does this have a different feel than singing OP themes?

LiSA: I sing with the thought that the OP is the theme of the story and conveys the author’s thoughts, as well as being the first “face” seen in the work. So, it has to be cute and it has to be cool. Because character songs are songs the character herself sings, I think it’s important to keep in mind how close I am to the character.

TOM: We hear you are in charge of the OP theme for the TV anime The Irregular at Magic High School to begin in April. Can you tell us about the song?

LiSA: The sibling main characters of The Irregular at Magic High School greatly care for each other, and this resembles the trust I have in my fans. The fans believe that “LiSA will definitely make it enjoyable.” So I want to bring out the cool me. I sang the song after linking together these thoughts and feelings.

TOM: Did you aim to become an anison artist from the beginning?

LiSA: I didn’t even imagine it. It’s not that I’m the type of person who doesn’t watch anime much, but I liked rock that bucks the trend, like Avril Lavigne, so anime was something that I wasn’t close to. When I was in charge of Girls Dead Monster, I was totally lost at first. However, I was able to sympathize a lot with Yui’s dream to be a musician, and I began after thinking that if this is how it is, I can probably do it too.

TOM: Can you tell us about your fashion sense?

LiSA: I like primary colors. So, I feel that a fashion statement of mine is using many quirky colors. I buy a lot of Western-style clothes from brands like Hysteric Glamour and Candy Stripper.

TOM: If you were to perform overseas, what would you want to convey to everyone?

LiSA: I would like to put on a performance so that people overseas who have heard music created in Japan would happily think “This music was made here?!” when they visit Japan.

TOM: Lastly, a message to all your overseas fans, please.

LiSA: I want to make tons of music for everyone to enjoy that crosses borders. And I will do my best from here on as well so that I can definitely visit places where I can meet all of you.

Look forward to more to come from LiSA, including the OP theme to the upcoming anime The Irregular at Magic High School.
