Human Figure Project: The Art of 3D Printing Has Evolved!

What in the world?! That figure looks exactly like the guy carrying it around!

Among the many anime-related booths at last month’s Anime Contents Expo (ACE) 2013, one booth stood out in particular. The booth was themed around the “Human Figure Project,” and had a 3D scanner and printer that was being used to make figures. You may be wondering what kind of figures they were making. Anime characters? Manga characters? Perhaps something different? The target of the Human Figure Project is making figures of people who really exist! You could even create a figure of your favorite idol.

Want to know how they make these figures? As exhibited at the Sony Music Communications Booth, A 3D scanner typically used for medical treatments is used as part of the process to make the figures. Armed with this nifty scanner, a full-color printer, and some plaster, a figure can be made after a real person. Steps include scanning a lucky model, which usually take about 10-20 minutes, registering data of the person’s entire body, waiting for the machine to do it’s thing, and polishing up the figure. Those who were scanned at the booth will be receiving their figures in about a month’s time!

You can purchase figures in small (15 cm), medium (20 cm), and large (30 cm) for 47,000 yen, 62,000 yen, and 109,000 yen respectively. It is also possible to make duplicates.

By the way, Sony Music Communications’ Yousuke Takuma, the producer for the original project, was walking around dressed exactly like the doppelganger figure he was carrying. He also volunteered to demonstrate the technology himself.

Masatoshi Fukuda, who worked together with Takuma on the project, commented on the future possibilities of this technology, saying “I want to do a Mado Magi Madoka Kaname 2D character collaboration.” Perhaps you will be able to act out a date with your figure and Madoka’s sometime soon.

The Human Figure Project has just begun. We will watch in anticipation for what is to come!
