Snow Miku Rocks Zepp Sapporo! [SNOW MIKU LIVE 2018 Report]

SNOW MIKU 2018 was held in Sapporo, Hokkaido, between February 5 and 12, 2018. SNOW MIKU LIVE 2018 is a live concert by Hatsune Miku held on February 9 and 10. Miku, who started her career on the internet and in videos, can now perform in front of large audiences. What kind of show does this virtual singer hold? Check out our report!

Around Zepp Sapporo, lots of people waited in line before the venue opened to catch a glimpse of Miku. Everyone had their favorite Miku goods with them, and they entered the venue holding matching glow sticks.

The fans milled nervously around the stage, but when the words “Are you ready?” appeared on the screen, the entire venue instantly heated up. Everyone simultaneously changed their glow sticks to Miku’s signature blue-green.

“SNOW MIKU LIVE 2018 is starting!” With Miku’s yell, she appeared in the back of the screen. The first song was the upbeat “Kimagure Mercy,” backed by a live band! Miku ran from right to left across the stage while singing and dancing.

You may be wondering exactly how Miku runs around the stage. Miku is projected onto a special screen using a number of projectors, so she has the same feeling of three-dimensionality and mass as a regular, living human!! Every detail, like the swaying of her trademark pigtails, gives Miku a feeling of realism.

With speed that only a virtual singer could pull off, Miku changed outfits in a flash with "Look This Way, Baby"!

There was also a call and response for “Musunde Hiraite Rasetsu To Mukuro”!

Miku's friends, Kagamine Rin and Len, Megurine Luka, KAITO, and MEIKO also appeared to show off their own songs. Len performed some acrobatic dances and the moonwalk, and Rin performed a choreography popular on MMD (Miku Miku Dance, freeware that lets you make 3D models dance and perform other activities) to the cheers of the crowd. KAITO, MEIKO, and Luka sang in a more mature atmosphere.

Even though the choreography was the same, each of their movements were slightly different, just like real humans.

During Miku's “Rollin Girl,” she asked the fans to sing certain parts with her.

“I want to hear your voices go even louder!” she said, making the fans go wild.

She ended the concert with “Tell Your World,” “ODDS&ENDS,” and “Utani Katachiwa Naikeredo” (replaced by “Letter Song” on the second day), but she appeared again when the fans raised their voices calling for her.

Miku, who was dressed to the nines in her Snow Miku costume, was welcomed by the fans’ voices and a sea of glow sticks in blue and white, Snow Miku's colors.

2015’s outfit was “The Lily of the Valley Fairy.”

Finally, this year’s SNOW MIKU outfit was a crane priestess!

For the encore, she performed previous Snow Miku theme songs like “Snow! Love! Really Magic” and “Snow Fairy Story,” and finished the concert with an impressive finale featuring Snow Miku 2018’s theme song, “Round Off the Square Earth.” For another taste of what it was like to see the virtual singer perform live, check it out in the concert video below!
