E3 2017: Top 3 Announcements

After the news and crowds have dispersed from E3, it’s time for us to come in and recap. We’re here to give you our top picks for the games and announcements which left the best impressions on us. By we, I mean our resident game enthusiasts here at TOM, Leon, Gin, and Odi - check out our selection!

Leon
Beyond Good and Evil 2
While I was always curious about the first Beyond Good and Evil, I never quite got around to playing it. Buying it, yes...However, now I have strong urge to go back and play it after watching the E3 trailer for Beyond Good and Evil 2. I was pulled in by the diverse characters, the world, and the originality and care that was shown for the story. I mean let’s face it, we’ve got a monkey with jokes, afro girl, and a cast of space pirates waiting to take to the stars, all great signs of an excellent adventure ready to begin.

Dragon Ball FighterZ
While we knew this was coming, seeing it in motion in the trailer was pure, “Oh my! Wait, what! Yoooo! I’m ready!” and probably a lot of other words coming from our mouths. Dragon Ball FighterZ is a 3v3 tag team fighter similar to the Marvel Vs. Capcom series. However, it’s being developed by Ark System Works, the creators of Guilty Gear Xrd. They’ve managed to capture the fast-paced, energetic fights from the Dragon Ball Z TV series and empower you with the same techniques. The 2.5D art style makes the art pop out and the good news is the game will be accessible to newcomers and hardcore fighting game fans alike. Keep an eye out for the closed beta before the end of this summer!

Anthem
Anthem’s gameplay trailer made me realize again how much I love exploring giant, open worlds with my friends. Borderlands, Destiny, and The Division are all examples of games where you’re squading up with your friends to explore, define your role on the team, and get awesome loot to deck out your character. Anthem looks to be no different. However, it does promise an even greater sense of scale and life found in the world, dynamic events that will form memorable moments between you and your friends, and with BioWare developing it, let’s hope for an awesome sci-fi story to hook us as well. Anthem has my attention and I’ll be awaiting every piece of news leading up to the fall 2018 release.

Monster Hunter World
With so many fantastic trailers and announcements revealed at E3, CAPCOM’s Monster Hunter World got me itching to play the game first hand more than any other title. Seeing the Monster Hunter franchise come back to a Playstation console there is no doubt immersing myself in an open world, hunting game with next gen graphics is a must. I can’t wait to see the full game in a world with seemingly endless possibilities for a completely new Monster Hunter experience.

Skull and Bones
After thoroughly enjoying Assassin's Creed IV Black Flag, this stand-alone title came as a pleasant surprise to me. Open water and online multiplayer naval battles are all qualities that roll off the tongue with excitement, and any chance to become a privateer on the Caribbean is a welcoming experience. With high hopes, I look forward to seeing more full-fledged maps and combat techniques as we close in on the release date.

Shadow of the Colossus PS4 Remake
After falling in love with the original Playstation 2 title, it has been a long, but worthwhile wait to see Team ICO announce a “true” HD remake of this epic story. Furthermore, by suggestively calling it a remake, you can’t help but anticipate a little extra content thrown into what was already a perfect adventure. With the enhanced graphics in a game like Shadow of the Colossus, it’s my hope they include a way to intricately take in-game stills and let players capture the beautiful backgrounds and intense moments of battling the colossi.

Ubisoft Conference
While some conferences can look like the most boring corporate exercise of the year, sometimes there’s true emotion involved The Ubisoft conference had two of those tear wrenching moments that made you feel part of one big family. Between Davide Soliani full of pride and awe over working with Shigeru Miyamoto for Mario + Rabbids: Kingdom Battle, the X-Com-like crossover we never knew we’d want, or Michel Ansel, visibly shaken by the overwhelming roar of applause over Beyond Good and Evil 2’s announcement, the pure feeling of passion over game making shared by Ubisoft was for me the highlight of this E3. Plus given all the different games that were shown, there’s definitely more than enough for everyone. Well played Ubi, you win this year’s E3 by far.

The Return of Samus
2016 was the 30th birthday of Metroid. And… Nothing happened. I suppose the timing wasn’t right with the Switch still unannounced, but finally here’s some news from Samus, and it’s not just one game! We’re getting a double dose of blasting and puzzling with both a new Metroid Prime for the Switch, even though there hasn’t been any footage yet, plus a full 2.5D remake of Metroid 2, the Game Boy episode, looking way more accessible now on the 3DS. I can’t wait to get my hands on these.

Devolver’s “We’re All Mad Here”
Devolver Digital is a publisher of indie games, you may know them from games like Hotline Miami. And since last year, their approach to E3 has been… original to say the least. After camping in the parking lot of the Hooters in front of the LA Convention Center last year, they held a much more original press conference this year. The 15-minute video was designed to ridicule a few of today’s games industry and consumer trends. Releasing broken games, stage audience’s over-appreciation of every announcement, online comments about what should and shouldn’t be in games, and even the throwing money at the screen meme. It’s one of the best things you’ll see at this year’s E3. I personally can’t wait to see their collaboration work with Suda51.

We hoped you enjoyed E3 as much as we did, and we'll see you again same time next year! Also, feel free to leave your comments below let us know what you thought were the best announcements at E3!
