Kyoto’s Nijo Castle may be known as one of the city’s most traditional tourist spots but cutting edge artist NAKED is about to bring the area into the modern age for cherry blossom viewing season. The Nijo Castle Sakura Matsuri 2017 - Directed by NAKED will take place from March 24 - April 16, 2017 bringing the artist’s famed projection mapping and lighting techniques to the ancient Kyoto landmark.
Nijo Castle attracts around 26 million visitors each April during cherry blossom season but rather than merely preserving traditional Japanese culture, the city of Kyoto has embarked upon a project of promoting it throughout the world.
NAKED’s projection mapping project takes inspiration from the traditional art of noh theatre which is filled with stories of ghosts and cherry blossom. Split into six different areas with a narrative theme, the event will showcase CG video created by NAKED with the assistance of Noh master Awaya Akio. In addition to the narrative spectacle, visitors can also enjoy food and drink as well as a series of stage performances in the specially set up hospitality area.
The general concept for the series is inspired by the world of noh in which the ghosts of Kyoto have invited the visitors to a special cherry blossom viewing banquet.
