Kimi no Na wa. and Shin Godzilla Score Wins at 20th Japan Media Arts Festival

The Japanese Agency for Cultural Affairs has revealed the 2016 category winners for its annual Media Arts Festival!

Each year, thousands of works from all over the world compete for the top spot in the art, entertainment, animation, and manga categories that the Media Arts Festival ranks. This time, the panel had its hands full considering 4,034 entries from 88 countries - the highest number of applicants yet!

The winner of the entertainment category was Shin Godzilla, which premiered in July 2016 and was directed by Anno Hideaki and Higuchi Shinji. This Godzilla film was the first in Japan in the last 12 years and was highly praised for the director’s unique approach and complex storyline.

Meanwhile, Shinkai Makoto’s Your Name shot to the top of the animation category! The win is unsurprising and well-deserved - in a little under a year, the film has found itself the highest-grossing anime film worldwide and the fourth highest-grossing anime film in Japan! The panel of judges praised Your Name for the gorgeous animation and the touching plot that left countless fans overwhelmed with emotion.

Interface I, an artistic assembly of ever-interacting strings and motors, won the art category.

Finally, Ishizuka Shinichi’s BLUE GIANT, the charming story of a jazz player, was crowned winner of the manga category.

These four winners will be displayed for everyone to see on Sept. 9 in Tokyo at the NTT Intercommunication Center and the Tokyo Opera City Art Gallery!
