50th Anniversary Exhibition for Author of The Rose of Versailles to Open!

An exhibition featuring The Rose of Versailles titled “Debut 50th Anniversary Commemorative Exhibition Ikeda Riyoko -With BeruBara-” will be held between March 8 and 20 in the eighth floor hall of Nipponbashi Takashimaya in Osaka.

This year marks the 50th anniversary of Ikeda Riyoko’s debut as a manga artist, and the exhibition will introduce not only the beauty of her most known series The Rose of Versailles, but also other works from her half-century-long history as a creator. There will be over 200 original pages and other precious pieces including previously unpublished material from her early and newer works alike, such as the historical romance Jotei Ekaterina ( Empress Catherine ), Orpheus no Mado ( The Window of Orpheus ), a story filled with Ikeda’s love for music, and the new chapters of The Rose of Versailles.

If that wasn’t reason enough, there will also be an array of original goodies, such as an official book and collaboration items with the tea shop Teapond, and there’s an autograph session planned as well, making it a must-see for fans of Ikeda’s work.

After undertaking kashihon (rental book) works, Ikeda Riyoko made her magazine debut with Bara Yashiki no Shoujo in 1967 and started The Rose of Versailles in 1972. Taking place around the French Revolution, this story has been read by many generations through the years and has been the basis of many Takarazuka musicals. The Rose of Versailles was also recently rebooted with a new series subtitled “Episodes,” the latest volume of which (Volume 3 of 13) was just released on Jan. 25.
