March Comes in Like a Lion Film Preview Revealed

A preview was released for the first and second March Comes in Like a Lion films coming out on Mar. 18 and Apr. 22 respectively.

March Comes in Like a Lion is a live-action adaptation directed by Otomo Keishi (also known for Rurouni Kenshin), based on the manga of the same name by Umino Chica. Having made an unprecedented debut as a shogi pro in middle school, Kiriyama Rei (Kamiki Ryunosuke) lives alone in Tokyo at 17. There, he meets 3 sisters named Kawamoto Akari, Hinata, and Momo, and grows as both a shogi player and as a person.

A number of character visuals capturing each capture based on the original work have been released featuring Kamiki as Kiriyama Rei and Sometani Shota as Nikaidou Harunobu, among others. Now, though, we get to see a bit of the film’s dramatic scenes in this short preview.

The video begins at the funeral of protagonist Kiriyama Rei’s parents and younger sister, who died in a car accident, and his father’s friend and pro shogi player Koda (Toyokawa Etsushi) asking, “You like shogi?” to which Kiriyama answers, “Yes.”

By 17, he’s called a “genius pro shogi player,” and with no home or family, he endures loneliness while focusing on shogi. After that, though, he meets the 3 Kawamoto sisters (Kurashina Kana, Kiyohara Kaya, Niitsu Chise) and his shogi rival, Nikaidou Harunobu (Sometani Shota), and he begins to find his own place in the world.

You can catch a glimpse at the powerful drama of this work through Kiriyama being yelled at by his sister-in-law Kyoko (Arimura Kasumi), getting hit by Goto (Ito Hideaki), another pro shogi player with a complex relationship with Kyoko, and Kiriyama crying into the night, “Shogi’s all I have! I have to become strong...”

Appearances are also made by Shimada (Sasaki Kuranosuke), a pro shogi player who guides Rei, as well as the genius “Child of God” Soya Toji (Kase Ryo).

All in all, this preview gives you a great look into the film adaptation of March Comes in Like a Lion.

The first March Comes in Like a Lion film opens on Mar. 18, and the second opens on Apr. 22.
