Makoto Shinkai’s 5 Centimeters Per Second Set for Outdoor Screening at Tokyo National Museum!

Tokyo National Museum will be setting up an outdoor cinema screen on Oct. 14 & 15 in collaboration with mobile cinema Kino Iglu. They’ll be showing the much-loved 2007 work 5 Centimeters Per Second from Makoto Shinkai, whose film Your Name is currently riding high at the box office.

After the success of the 10th anniversary celebration of The Girl Who Leapt Through Time this summer, the museum will be setting up an outdoor cinema once again in the autumn when it screens Makoto Shinkai’s 5 Centimeters per Second. With Masayoshi Yamazaki’s music in the background, the movie is a heartbreaking love story filled with Shinkai’s characteristic visual beauty which has won several international awards and is loved all over the world.

The screen will be set up in front of the museum along with 1,000 seats. There will also be a number of carts and stalls to add to the atmosphere while the audience enjoys this painful love story under the autumn skies.

On screening days, the museum is also staying open late until 10:00 p.m. so that visitors can enjoy the special exhibition “The Hidden Buddha of Rakuyaji Temple, Shiga” (separate charge for entry) after watching the movie. Story:
At which speed must I live to be able to see you again?

A heartbreaking love story of two people swept along by everyday life. Takaki and Akari develop feelings for each other in elementary school but are separated when Akari moves away. The two keep in touch by writing letters to each other, but when Takaki discovers he’s going to be moving even further away he decides to go and see Akari first, heading out to catch a train with the snow falling around him. Finally Takaki grows up and moves to Tokyo where his life of working hard every day loses its shine and he begins to recall long forgotten memories in the busy streets.
