Author Yoshiki Tanaka has given the world countless masterpieces including The Heroic Legend of Arslan and Sohryuden. Among them is Legend of the Galactic Heroes, considered to be his first masterpiece, which was published into 10 volumes total beginning in 1982 and 5 volumes of a side story. The series has over 15 million copies in print. Hot off the news in August announcing a new anime series produced by Production I.G, a new development in the form of a comic has been revealed. The new comic will be published in Shueisha’s manga magazine Weekly Young Jump. Serialization will begin in issue 45 of the magazine on sale Oct. 8.
Though Legend of the Galactic Heroes has been adapted into comics before, this one will use a newly created, unique world based on Tanaka’s original work. Taking on this new challenge is popular manga artist Ryu Fujisaki. Fujisaki is known for such hits as Fengshen Yanyi and Shiki, each of which has been adapted to anime, giving him a familiarity among anime fans. This tag team between the iconic Tanaka and Fujisaki is certainly worth taking note of.
Legend of the Galactic Heroes is set in the distant future when humanity has ventured forth into the vast cosmos. During this age, the Galactic Empire, which spans several planets under the rule of an Emperor, and Free Planets Alliance, which fights against the Galactic Empire, have become the two competing dominant powers. However, history would change entirely with the appearance of two geniuses: Reinhard on the Galactic Empire side and Yang Wen Li on the Free Planets Alliance side.
