The official Kantai Collection event “Third Kan Colle Naval Review” was held at the Pacifico Yokohama National Grand Hall on Sunday, Aug. 9. Appearing at the event were cast members Sumire Uesaka, Saki Fujita, Yuka Iguchi, Ayane Sakura, Nao Toyama, Yuka Otsubo, Rina Hidaka, Aya Suzaki, Iori Nomizu, Yumi Tanibe, Sarah Emi Bridcutt, Misato, and Ayana Taketatsu. The artists in charge of the opening and ending themes, Akino from Bless4 and Shiena Nishizawa, were also present. It was a battle formation for an all-out war.
This official event that began on Aug. 3, 2014 with the First Kan Colle Naval Review, “Naval Review Rehearsal,” has been held twice since then. Yokohama is a famous port city, and many Kan-musume (Fleet Girls) gathered in Pacifico Yokohama. A “naval review” is like a parade of a naval fleet. In the roles of each of their characters, the cast members of the “naval fleet” took formation and introduced the Kan-musume comprising the fleet. The cast members playing each Kan-musume were announced one by one, and the crowd let out loud cheers as each appeared on stage. An attracting stage was created as well that had a large silhouette of a battleship and a large screen at the back.
With scripts in hand, the cast performed the drama and news segments of the show. In the drama part, options appeared on screen at every point they do in the original game too. This selection was decided by the Admirals (audience members) who held up pen lights either shining red or blue, with the most popular color being the option chosen. There were many selections familiar to Admirals (players) like “Don’t Pursue / Engage in Battle.” In fact, scenarios were planned for each different route. At the afternoon performance we attended, the Admirals got the normal response for each set of options.
The performance portion was impressive as well. Drama broke out and the cast moved into a column formation followed by an elaborate battle scene that featured sprays of water (or water vapor?) and explosions that used actual gunpowder. I could really feel the enthusiasm of the production side in wanting to convey to the utmost the world of Kan Colle.
There were no talk segments or mini games, the cast stayed in character as their Kan-musume the entire time on stage. Each of the character’s outfits was also recreated, including the sailor uniforms. The actresses’ attitudes as well as the careful attention to the series’ world resulted in powerful immersion.
The crowd heated up during the concert segment as Uesaka, Hidaka, and Tanibe sang “Bright Shower Days,” Sakura sang “Koi no 2-4-11,” and Iguchi, a popular addition who joined the game in July, sang the enka song “Kagamisaki.” Toyama also sang the character song “Anata to no Kizuna” as each of the four Kongo sisters. She played each part as she belted out the song.
Lastly, Nishizawa sang the ending theme to the TV series, “Fubuki,” and Akino sang the opening theme, “Miiro.” Though only one song each, the powerful performances captivated Admirals. The event was brought to a close with an encore of the entire cast singing “Anata to no Kizuna” together with the Admirals.
In other news, a new Kan-musume for the Kan Colle game, refueling vessel Hayasui (CV: Iori Nomizu), was announced, and in a teaser PV shown during the event’s closing, it was revealed that production has begun on a Kan Colle movie slated to be released in 2016.
The teaser even showed Kako, Furutaka, and Chokai who are absent from the TV series. Many other Kan-musume make appearances as well. It seems the movie will progress side-by-side with the previously announced sequel to the TV anime series. Keep it here for follow-up reports while you look forward to the release.
