Pompompurin, Shingan Crimsonz rank high in Sanrio Character Ranking; Show By Rock!! also makes big leap up the ranking
The results are in for the popular voting campaign Sanrio Character Ranking put on by Sanrio, a company that has brought to the world popular characters one after the next including Hello Kitty and My Melody. This year’s first place winner with 270,837 votes is Pompompurin.
Pompompurin is a boy character modeled on a Golden Retriever who wears an olive brown beret as his trademark. He’s a laid-back boy who loves his mom’s pudding. He debuted in 1996 and won the Newcomer Award and ranked first in 1997. He has enjoyed long-running popularity.
Coming in second place, being edged out of first by just 35 votes, is Shingan Crimsonz with a total vote count of 270,802. Shingan Crimsonz is a popular rock band from Show By Rock!!, a project themed after music and bands. Their uniqueness comes from their concept of being a “full-throttle chunibyo visual-kei rock band.” The band is comprised of members Crow, Aion, Yaiba, and Rom, and is highly popular with females.
Show By Rock!! also has a TV anime adaptation that began airing this year in April. This year, five bands from Show By Rock!! were nominated for the Sanrio Character Ranking, and Shingan Crimsonz edged out the main character’s band, Plasmagica. Four bands from Show By Rock!! made it into the top 10 this year, with Plasmagica at No. 6, Trichronika at No. 8, and Tsurezurenaru Ayatsuri Mugenan at No. 10. It seems the anime adaptation played a big role in this outcome.
Other staple characters on the ranking include Cinnamoroll at No. 3, My Melody at No. 5, Hello Kitty at No. 7, and Little Twin Stars at No. 9. The full ranking results can be found on the official Sanrio Character Ranking site. This year’s ranking also resulted in the highest number of votes in the ranking’s history, surpassing 3,765,000.
Also, in celebration of its 30th anniversary, the ranking is teaming up with McDonald’s in Japan. Happy Meal sets called “Sanrio Characters” will be offered for the top eight ranked characters. The sets will go on sale slightly ahead of spring 2016, and the lineup of popular characters will likely create buzz.
