An anime commercial for JR West’s “Summer Train!” campaign directed by Studio Ghibli alumnus Yoshiyuki Momose has been released.
A television commercial featuring a much-discussed anime production was released on June 24. It was directed by Yoshiyuki Momose, a long-time supporting figure at Studio Ghibli, and was made for the West Japan Railway Company’s “Summer Train!” campaign. The commercial depicts the summer vacation of three generations of the Nishimoto family. The heart-warming animated short can now be enjoyed by all.
The “JR West Summer Train!” campaign welcomed staff who had previously been involved with Studio Ghibli to produce the commercial. The director, Yoshiyuki Momose, has a long history with Studio Ghibli, working on such productions as Grave of the Fireflies and Only Yesterday. Animators and art staff with experience working at Ghibli were also gathered for the project. The scenery of the commercial recalls the mountains of My Neighbor Totoro and the sea of Ponyo.
Momose poured his fastidiousness into the completed work. For example, the shinkansen shot adopts the technique of depicting everything with background art. Using CG for just the vehicle has a tendency to look mechanical, but with this method the train is in harmony with the world, and its existence is noticeable.
During the dubbing process, both the adults and children actually jumped around and ran in what was an unusual recording session! This was because their objective was to depict a fun and bright family. With everyone cheerful, the makers wanted to draw attention to the voice tones and put the listener in a good mood.
Furthermore, the barbecue scene is worth paying attention to. With the deadline approaching, the team continued production until the last minute, as they wanted to make the food “a little more delicious-looking”. With digital effects, they tweaked the color of the ingredients, added extra touches, and increased the “flavor” of the food.
An accident occurred during the final check when the eggplant the grandmother is turning didn't appear to be cooked, but grill marks were added, and the delicious barbecue scene was completed.
