Licca-chan Series Gets First New Mama Doll in 14 Years, First New Papa Doll in 26 Years!

On April 30, the Mama (Arie Kayama) and Papa (Pierre Kayama) of dress-up doll Licca-chan went on sale. It has been 14 years since a new Mama doll, and 26 years since a new Papa doll. This renewal will mark the 6th generation of Mama dolls, and the 2nd generation of Papa dolls.

The new Mama and Papa dolls were created with the concept of both being symbols of contemporary mothers and fathers as well as possessing an enviable existence. The Mama’s image is that of “a beautiful mother who places importance on her own style,” and the Papa’s is that of “a kind, casually stylish father who is actively involved in his home life and raising children.”

The Mama doll’s irises have been increased in size, and adjusting her gaze to the left like her daughter Licca-chan (until now she has looked straight forward) causes her to resemble a more youthful parent. Her long, gently curled hair parted in the middle creates an air of elegance.

The Papa doll’s appearance has been adjusted by changing the formerly thick eyebrows to more styled eyebrows, and the corners of his eyes have been slightly lowered to create a friendlier image. The clothes have been changed from the suit of the first generation to a casual shirt and denim outfit.

For 48 years since her introduction in 1967, Licca-chan has always reflected the vogue of the period, and expressed the dreams and longings of young girls. She has depicted the fashion, careers, and family life of the changing eras. Licca-chan’s Mama and Papa are not simply the “ideal mother and father dolls,” but for the girls who play with Licca chan, they are rather a personification of the ideal married couple, as well as a personification of the family of the modern era.

The History of Licca-chan’s Mama

From left: 1st Generation, 2nd Generation, 3rd Generation, 4th Generation, 5th Generation

1st Generation: “Kind Mama” (1969)

The Mama doll debuted as a trendsetting working woman of her era, a fashion designer. She was depicted as a cool, composed woman with a contemporary up-swept hairstyle.

2nd Generation: “New Mama” (1979)

The next generation was depicted as an idealised mother of her era who was an expert on domestic matters. With her somewhat drooping eyes and long curled hair, she had a kind ambience.

3rd Generation: “Fresh Mama” (1985)

The children’s ideal shifted from a strong mother to a young and beautiful mother, so the image to date was completely changed. She came to possess a cute air with her bright hair, big clear eyes and youthful round face.

4th Generation: “Happy Smile Mama” (1993)

This generation depicted a woman eternally beautiful after having children. With her slender face, her image was changed to an adult woman who exuded both beauty and dignified strength. Her outfits included many neat suits.

5th Generation: “Sunshine Mama” (2001)

With an increase in height by 2.5 cm, her smile with visible white teeth created an impressive expression. She reflected the image of friendship between mother and daughter, such as mother-daughter holidays, and her rounded face showed a family resemblance.

The History of Licca-chan’s Papa

1st Generation

After Licca-chan went on sale in 1967, the Papa doll was MIA for a while. However, 22 years later in 1989 he went on sale for the first time. The “My Home Papa” debut was against the backdrop of the introduction of a five day working week, rather than the image of the perpetually working Japanese father during Japan’s period of economic growth. Recently his image has come to reflect active participation in family life, and raising six children - eg. getting in the bath with his kids, and cooking and cleaning. This comes from a recent social climate that supports female social progress and active male involvement in child-rearing, and prioritises time with the family above all.
