Shiyu is a celebrated illustrator known in Taiwan as the “painter of high school girl uniforms,” and he will hold his solo exhibit, “Shiyu Solo Exhibit,” from April 29 (Wed.) to May 11 (Mon.) at Nakano Broadway’s Gallery Little High in Tokyo.
The exhibit is being held to celebrate the publication of Seifuku Shijo 2, a sequel to the much-loved illustration collection Seifuku Shijo: Taiwan Joshikosei Seifuku Sen (Uniform Supremacy: Collection of Taiwan High School Uniforms) of illustrations of high school girls in uniforms.
This will be Shiyu’s first solo exhibit in Japan, and approximately 30 works will be on display and for sale. Shiyu will also hold a signing on the first day.

Shiyu is an up-and-coming illustrator in Taiwan. He has been invited to participate in the Angoulême International Comics Festival, which is called the “Cannes of the manga world,” and he is popular for his delicate and unique touch, and his aesthetically rich and varied painting style.
Shiyu’s masterpiece, Seifuku Shijo: Taiwan Joshikosei Seifuku Sen, is a full color illustration collection that models school uniforms and club uniforms worn by female students from 54 actual high schools in Taiwan. The collection took two years of careful data collection to create, and is trending not just in Taiwan, but in Japan as well.
The illustrations faithfully recreate the actual uniforms down to, of course, the embroidery on the school badge and the designs of the buttons, as well as the checkered prints on the skirts, the stitching, and even the number of lines and pleats.
Also, the uniforms were created based on thoroughly details research and examination to follow each school’s dress code, which includes no hair dyes, no perms, no makeup, no accessories, and no cleavage.
There will even be a signing event with the artist himself!
Seifuku Shijo: Taiwan Joshikosei Seifuku Sen is modeled on the high schools of Northern Taiwan, while the sequel, Seifuku Shijo 2 published in Taiwan in January, in modeled on the 55 high schools of central Taiwan.
On April 29, the first day of the Japanese exhibit, which celebrates the sequel’s release, Shiyu will arrive in Japan and will hold a signing event in the gallery for those who purchase his collections.
It seems we can expect works of vividly depicted, beautiful high school girls from this artist blowing up right now in Taiwan.
