A Kyoto Tradition: Elegant ‘Knights of Sidonia’ Folding Fan Limited to 256 Available Now

Knights of Sidonia is collaborating with noted folding fan maker Maisendo. Maisendo has produced a limited number of folding fans based on Knights of Sidonia, which incorporates plenty of Japanese tradition.

Maisendo creates folding fans for the modern world using traditional techniques. Their fans are for sale at Gion and Kiyomizu stores. This time, the company challenged itself with an unusual collaboration with a popular anime.

The collaboration fan was created by a designer exclusive to Maisendo and takes black as the design’s base color. Its highlight is its Knights of Sidonia-like aesthetic. The name of TOA Heavy Industries, a company that appears in the series, is also printed in the center of the fan. The refined design also includes main character Nagate Tanikaze’s designation number. Being that the fans were created by such a long-standing company, they, of course, also come with an elaborately crafted holder. The fan holder is made of genuine leather and features a stamp of the logo and an attached carabiner themed after a safety harness.

Current production is limited to 256 fans. This number is in reference to Knights of Sidonia’s 256 Guardians. Each fan is one of a kind and comes with a serial number printed on the rib.

The fans were already for sale in advance at the Kyomaf booth at AnimeJapan 2015 held on March 21 and 22. General sales are currently underway on the web. The fan costs 8,316 yen. This is a rare gem crafted with techniques unique to specialty artisans.
