‘Sailor Moon Crystal’ Collaboration Cafe Report: An Enjoyable Atmosphere for the Eyes and Ears

On April 6, a Sailor Moon Crystal collaboration cafe opened at Anion Station in Kabukicho, Shinjuku. The cafe offers an atmosphere in which the charms of Sailor Moon can be enjoyed in a variety of ways.

Sailor Moon Crystal is an anime series based on the original work Sailor Moon by Naoko Takeuchi. The anime began streaming on Nico Nico Douga in July 2014. The second season is currently in production, and the first season began airing on TV this month.

Anion Station is a space managed by Namco and concepted around anime that holds collaboration cafes. The space has a stage and a radio booth. With an ambiance similar to a bar, there are 10 monitors and these can be seen from anywhere in the space.

The Sailor Moon Crystal collaboration cafe being held this time is to commemorate the TV broadcast. Inside the cafe, there is an exciting atmosphere, with collaboration drinks and desserts available. There are drinks based on each of the five Sailor Soldiers, and in a surprising touch some even have sparkling shaved ice in them and are fun just to look at. Those who order a drink off the menu will also receive a matching Sailor Soldier cookie and coaster. If your favorite character is among those available, you’ll likely want one.

Available desserts include three kinds of waffles and one kind of pancakes. These are also in the image of the Sailor Soldiers and include Mamo-chan, Ami, Rei, and others. Those who order off the dessert menu will receive a free original luncheon mat. You’ll definitely want to collect these too. Drinks not on the collaboration menu can also be ordered, so we recommend the coffee - it’s perfect for those who find desserts to be a bit too sweet.

There is also more to the cafe than just the menu; there is plenty to enjoy with your eyes and ears too. For the music, there is a so-called “Setlist Battle” in which the two-person Anion Cheers personality group begins a setlist with Sailor Moon music and what follows is up to the customers. Each table has a King Blade penlight, and customers can vote by shining the designated color.

There is also a “Jukebox Rock On!” which takes requests from Twitter for songs from a Sailor Moon music list. Everything from nostalgic songs to recent ones can be enjoyed. It’s an interesting experiment and even shows Twitter messages on-screen.

The first episode of Sailor Moon Crystal is also screened in the cafe each day. In addition, there is a real-time viewing of the TV broadcast of the anime every Monday at 21:30, and customers can watch it on a large screen.

Sailor Moon merchandise is also available at the cafe, and a space has been created that is irresistible to fans. The cafe will be open until Wednesday, May 6, so for those in Japan, Golden Week may provide the perfect opportunity to check it out.
