The Shin-Bungeiza theater in Ikebukuro, Tokyo will be holding a special late-night screening titled “Viscous and Shocking: The World of Yasuomi Umetsu,” presented collaboratively by the theater and the anime magazine Anime Style. The screening will be held on April 10, 2015, and will feature legendary cult classics A Kite and Mezzo Forte.
The late-night screening will be held as a commemoration for the Hollywood live-action version of the movie Kite, which is based on the anime and opening on April 11, 2015, as well as the release of the Blu-ray versions for A Kite (April 3) and Mezzo Forte (April 24).
Both A Kite and Mezzo Forte are completely original OVAs made by Yasuomi Umetsu who was in charge of almost all aspects of the works including the original story, directing, script, character design, and animation direction. Brimming with sex and violence, Umetsu’s unique touch brings his world to life with a distinct, stylish flair.
The screening will not show the R18 original version, and will be showing the R15 cut version from the DVD, which leaves out the erotic scenes instead. Viewers will have the chance to experience the world of Umetsu on the silver screen, which has been praised by the likes of famous Hollywood directors such as Quentin Tarantino and Rob Cohen.
A special talk show with director Yasuomi Umetsu himself and Anime Style editor-in-chief Yuichiro Oguro in attendance is also planned for that evening, giving the audience a chance to hear all about the intricacies that went into the production of the OVAs. Tickets went on sale March 11 at the Shin-Bungeiza ticket booths as well as through the online ticketing site Ticket Pia. The regular ticket price is 1,800 yen (tax included), while prices for pre-sale and members of the Shin-Bungeiza Society are 1,600 yen (tax included).
Autographed copies of Umetsu’s Thin Book will also be for sale at the event. This booklet features original character designs as well image boards for Umetsu’s current anime movie project in the works called Kiss and Cry. The book is a limited edition made for the event and can only be bought there or on the Anime Style Online Shop and Amazon. This book will not be sold at normal bookstores.
