A highly popular sci-fi comedy that began broadcasting in April 2013 during TV Tokyo’s Drama 24 programming block, on which a great number of masterpiece drama have been broadcast, is getting a movie adaptation! All Esper Dayo! the Movie will be released Japanwide in September.

The series is set in Higashimikawa, Aichi Prefecture and follows normal high school student Yoshiro Kamogawa (played by Shota Sometani) who suddenly awakens to find he has esper powers. It features foolhardy banter between him and the other espers, and just a pinch of ecchiness.

The series has become talked about by viewers for its offbeat gags and espers that have ridiculous powers, especially among male viewers who think Erina Mano and Kaho are cute, and it continues to be successful, having won two Galaxy Awards: a monthly award in July 2013 and an honorable mention in the drama category for 2013.

Continuing from the TV drama, All Esper Dayo! the Movie will be directed and penned by Sion Sono and will star Shota Sometani.

Regarding the film, director Sono commented, “For the TV series, I was able to be in a supervisory position for everything from locations to outfits to casting, and if I were able, I would have liked to direct all the episodes, but due to circumstances with work, I had to entrust countless episodes to other directors, which I was disappointed to have to do, so I’m happy that I get to direct this film by myself.” There are high expectations for this tag team duo that has worked on not just dramas but several of Sono’s movies including Himizu and Tokyo Tribe.

The last episode of the drama ended suddenly like a spread out furoshiki being speedily folded up, with many feeling like “Huh? But I still wanted to watch their story!”, so there is nothing more pleasant for fans than being able to finally see the espers once again, and this time on the big screen.

In other news, other works in the series are heating up as well. New chapters in the comic, which is currently on hiatus, will begin being published in Young Magazine Vol. 16 on sale March 16, and in addition to this a special spin-off program called All Esper Dayo! Extra Edition ~ The Esper Goes to the Capital will be broadcast in the spring. Look forward to these along with the movie!
