“Leiji Matsumoto Art Exhibit: Character Artwork” will open in Cheepa’s Gallery in Ginza, Tokyo on Saturday, Feb. 7. Leiji Matsumoto is a manga artist who has brought to life such series as Galaxy Express 999. He has won the Metal with Purple Ribbon and various awards including Chevalier in the Ordre des Arts et des Lettre, and he also works as a professor at several universities. Many of his works have been adapted to film, starting with Galaxy Express 999 and later Space Pirate Captain Harlock, Queen Millennia, and others.
Sponsoring the exhibit is Ulala Cube, a company that creates countless character goods and toys. Ulala Cube owns the Cheepa’s Gallery and from time to time it holds events for anime and tokusatsu works. Previous exhibits include Creamy Mami and Godzilla.
On display at “Leiji Matsumoto Art Exhibit: Character Artwork” will be precious original artwork with a focus on series that graced the covers of magazines. Original event merchandise will also be on sale, along with high quality reproduction art prints that faithfully reproduce every last detail of the original artwork called U-Art Collection that come signed by Matsumoto and engraved with an edition number.
At the gallery’s cafe, there will be a special menu with latte art in your choice of Maetel, Harlock, or Oidon. Wall art will be displayed along with merchandise to give it an atmosphere in which you’ll be surrounded by the characters Matsumoto has created.
Furthermore, signing events and gallery talks with Matsumoto are planned throughout the duration of the event as well, and details on these will be released in early February. The exhibit will run until Sunday, March 22.
