An anime adaptation has been greenlit for Himouto! Umaru-chan, which is currently serialized in Weekly Young Jump (Shueisha). This announcement came on Dec. 18. Himouto! Umaru-chan is a popular manga by Sankaku Head that began serialization in Issue 15 of 2013, and currently three volumes have been published. The fourth volume will release on Dec. 19 (Fri.). With over 500,000 copies in print, this gag series has grown in popularity bit by bit on the Internet and on bookshelves.
The main character of the story is Umaru Doma, a stunning high school beauty with a gifted mind who is liked by everyone and is perfect in every way. But once at home, she changes completely and lazes around, shrinking into a chibi form. She lives with her salaryman older brother Taihei, and the story develops around dialogue mainly between the two of them. Other highly unique characters also make appearances. It gained high support for its parodies and gags, and word spread.
There is also a spin-off to the series called Himouto! Umaru-chan S that is updated once a month on Niconico Seiga. The spin-off is also published in Miracle Jump and Tonari no Young Jump, and its story is set in a parallel world. In February 2014, rubber mascots of characters from the series were introduced as crane game prizes, and mascot plush toys were released as Part 2 in late April. Even without an anime adaptation, many products have been developed.
The official site has opened in time with the announcement about the anime being greenlit. The site shows various random Umaru illustrations drawn by author Sankaku Head. A point fans are likely curious about is just what this gag manga will become as a broadcast anime. Look forward to the next report, which will include release information.
